Renovation Ideation – How to Get Ideas for Home Renovations
  • Opening Intro -

People are often scared to do home renovations, but once they learn how easy it is to get things right, they are more than happy to plunge into their projects. Whether you are considering doing it yourself or having someone else do it, there are some surefire ways to get ideas for your projects.

-------------------------------------

Consider these sources for your renovation.

Internet Search

The internet is full of ideas. A simple search reveals a wide assortment of images to consider, but don’t stop there. Look up social media sites to get an idea of what others are doing. At times, people repurpose old items to make new useful pieces of furniture or storage. Don’t stop there either. Look up resorts, hotels and the interiors of buildings. It might seem extreme to turn your bedroom into something that resembles a resort, but that’s half the fun. Homes were meant to be enjoyed.

Vacations

Here is where you find out what you really want in your home. Think of the perfect vacation you’d like to take, or think of one you have taken in the past. Consider the things that surrounded you that made it perfect. It could have been a park bench where you sat eating the most delicious ice cream while admiring the ocean view. Perhaps, you’d like to turn your hallway into that perfect spot. So, you turn the flooring into a pathway of cobblestone, place a park bench against one wall, and paint a mural of the ocean on the opposing wall.

Magazines

Magazines are another source of beautiful and inspirational images. Don’t limit yourself to standard home magazines. Check out architectural and travel magazines. You are bound to find ideas for your home in any one of these. When agents search an MLS, new renovations stand out so keep this in mind.

Colors

It’s time to turn inward, and this is where most people start getting scared. Far too many people don’t trust themselves enough to decide what goes into their home so they end up with a house that looks like every other house. What catches people’s eyes during an MLS search are the things that make a house stand apart from the rest.

Color does have an impact on people. It’s not about what makes a house look pretty, it’s important to consider what kind of impact color has on moods and creativity. Some people appreciate bold colors because they help to motivate them while others are overstimulated by them. Take time to look at different colors and how they affect you. Choose relaxing colors in a study room, and choose creative colors in an office. You will discover you are more in balance with the right colors in your home.

Functionality

Here is where things get interesting. Homes that are renovated based upon functionality are highly prized by homeowners and everyone who visits. Let’s say you live in a particularly hot climate, so you decide to create a covered pergola surrounding your entire house. This creates much needed cooling to the house through shade. This sort of design could knock off 10 degrees Fahrenheit on the entire home. Add pressurized misters to this idea, and you can shave off another 20 degrees Fahrenheit. A home that can stay naturally cool without costing a fortune in electricity costs is highly desired. Think about what your home needs, inside and out, and go from there.

Outdoors

Bringing the outdoors in is fun. Consider what you like about being outside. You might like the sound of the trickling of a stream, or you may enjoy the look of wet stone. Whatever elements make you happy and at peace, incorporate them in your home. Have an indoor fountain or waterfall. Make a koi pond or a dry river bed in the middle of an Arizona room. The possibilities are infinite.

Renovating a home isn’t difficult when you get down to it. Don’t be afraid to explore several ideas. Visit different stores, and view the materials they have there. Once you start exploring different ideas, you’ll be surprised by what your mind comes up with.
