How to Add Curb Appeal by Renovating the Garage

How to Add Curb Appeal by Renovating the Garage
  • Opening Intro -

It's a room you probably only spend a few seconds in every day, but nonetheless it is a room that can make or break your home's exterior style.

The garage is by far the least-loved area on any property, but that doesn't mean you can forget about the way it looks.

-------------------------------------

In fact, if you tend to use your garage as a catch-all for broken, unwanted, or forgotten possessions, it is even more imperative that you make some renovations to create a more functional space.

Here are a few easy steps that will greatly improve the design of your garage. Maybe after the renovations are done, you’ll linger longer than a few seconds to appreciate how good the room looks inside and out.

Kick the Clutter

More than a quarter of Americans with two-car garages have so much stuff stored inside that they are forced to park their cars on the driveway or street; almost a third can only squeeze one car inside the garage. If this sounds like your garage, before you can start the renovation, you need to be willing to part with some of your stored items so you have space to create order and beauty.

The easiest way to kick the clutter in your garage is to dedicate a day to sifting through your storage and getting rid of things you no longer want or need. Items like the baby clothes that haven’t been worn in 10 years or the family boat that hasn’t seen the water since the ‘90s can definitely be donated to help needy families in your community. Other stuff, like broken game consoles or tragically outdated televisions, are probably best placed in the trash can.

One you have reduced your stored belongings to a more manageable amount, you can begin organizing it in a practical and tasteful way. You can divide your possessions into types ― for example: holiday decorations, yard tools, recreational gear, etc. Then, you should designate a specific area of the garage to keep each type ― for example: Holiday décor can fit in storage containers stacked against the wall; yard tools can be mounted on pegboard, and recreational gear can hang from the ceiling. Then, you can prevent the clutter from accumulating once again and disrupting your new garage design. Plus, it’ll be easier to find what you need, rather than digging through everything and making a worse mess.

Consider Flooring

You could spend thousands of dollars on natural wood floors for your living room ― hundreds for beautiful tile in the kitchen ― while you allow your garage floors to remain grimy, unfinished concrete. Like shoes to an outfit, flooring makes or breaks a room’s style, so it is important that you enhance your garage floors in one way or another.
Colored concrete is a simple and affordable option that makes sense in this heavily-trafficked space. Concrete can become colored one of in six ways:

  • Integral coloring.
A colorant is added during the concrete mixing process to create uniform color.
  • Shake-on coloring.
A powder pigment is sprinkled onto freshly poured cement.
  • Acid staining.
An acidic mixture chemically reacts with the minerals in hardened concrete, causing permanent color.
  • Acetone dying.
A solvent-based dye is applied to polished concrete to create vivid colors with a short dry-time.
  • Water-based dying.
A water-based dye is applied to polished concrete, but it requires a protective coating or it will fade quickly.
  • Color densifying.
A pigment is applied to the concrete with a hardener for more durability.

You might also lay porcelain tile, which is hard-wearing, easy to clean, and attractive. If you don’t expect to use your garage to park your car, you might consider carpeting or laminate floors as well.

Finish the Walls

Often, garages boast bare brick, wood, or metal panels that make the room feel cold and unimportant. It’s uncommon for a garage to come with finished walls, which is why putting in the effort in your home will set your space apart from the rest. While you work on the walls, you can consider adding windows to bring natural light into the garage, making the space even more inviting.

How to Apply Garage Floor Epoxy – in 2 Minutes:

Adding insulation is one of the biggest changes you can make to a garage. It allows the space to have uses besides storing outdoor items and vehicles; for example, once your garage is insulated, you can set up an all-weather gym, playroom, or studio. However, you should read up on the various types of insulation to find the one that fits your budget, climate, and values. After finishing the walls with drywall, you can paint with brighter colors that adhere to your home’s design style.

Rethink the Garage Door

For decades, garage doors have chosen practicality over aesthetics, but many home improvement stores offer more decorative options that provide the same essential function. Garage doors come in all sorts of materials and styles, so you should search for one that matches your overall design.

There are carriage house garage doors for a sophisticated rustic feel, aluminum and glass options for a more modern and minimalist look, and so much more. Because the garage door is usually visible from the street, this is perhaps the most important renovation you can make to improve your home’s curb appeal.
