Your Home’s Secret Toxins: How To Remove Black Mold
  • Opening Intro -

Mold might seem innocuous, but in reality is damaging not only to your home, but also to your health.

The most common form of mold is Stachybotrys chartarum, more commonly referred to as either toxic black mold or simply black mold.

-------------------------------------

Black mold is known as toxic because it produces a form of toxins called mycotoxins, which have the potential to cause acute and chronic health effects through ingestion, contact with the body, and inhalation.

It’s important to remember that these can be damaging not only to yourself and your children, but to your pets as well. They can act as simple allergies or irritants, but can also cause the immune system to weaken, and in certain cases, can also lead to death.

In this article, you will learn to identify the signs of black mold and how to eliminate mold growth in and around the home.

Signs of Black Mold

Black mold can manifest in either a green and black gelatinous form that is slimy to the touch, or it can take on a dry and powdery appearance with the same coloring. It emanates a distinctive odor of mildew.

With some forms of mold, you need only to keep an eye on a certain area of your home to monitor signs of mildew growth. Black mold, however, is notorious for being able to grow almost anywhere. Outside, black mold thrives in the soil, helping to break down organic substances. Inside the home, it is attracted to moist, warm areas. This can include places like the carpeting, dry-wall, drop-down ceiling tiles, wood paneling, and other similar areas. In some occasions, you may not be able to see the mold even when you can smell it.

Eliminating Mold Growth

Before you begin pulling down wallpaper, ripping up carpet, or removing a caulk line, make sure you have acquired some basic personal protection equipment first.

These should be considered the minimum requirements before starting.

Each area which has black mold growth will require a different method of removal. If found on unpainted drywall, there is unfortunately no other way to get rid of it other than simply replacing the drywall. This is a necessary measure; simply cleaning it won’t do any good as drywall is a porous material which absorbs the mold inside. If discovered on painted drywall, however, simply wipe or scrape away with a mold removal solution (see list below).

When mold is discovered on wood, it should be removed using a product from the list and a sponge, cloth, or scrubbing brush. To remove stains left behind by mold, you have the choice to lightly sand the affected area, or use a small amount of bleach.

Mold on carpet should be promptly removed and replaced with new carpeting. Be sure that the flooring underneath is completely dry, clean, and free of mold before laying down new carpet. To eliminate mold on a rug, it is suggested that you take the rug to a professional cleaner.

Mold which has grown on tiles or in grout can be removed using a strong scrubbing brush. The remaining stains can be bleached out. If you prefer, you can also tear out the old grout and completely replace it.

With each of these solutions, distill a small amount of the product inside water, and either spray onto the surface or wipe using a rag.
