Whether you have an entire home to decorate or just a single room, starting from scratch can be overwhelming. Sometimes limitless options make it harder to decide, not easier. Here are five tips to help you on your way to creating a room you’ll want to spend extra time in.
Figure out what you like
This may sound obvious, but a lot of people don’t really know what styles of interior decorating they like or they always stick with the same thing. To find out what your preferences are, look through interior design magazines. Collect images and then compare them. Are there similar colors, styles, patterns or furniture in the pictures? If there are, that means you’re focusing in on your taste. Also take into consideration the size of the room you’ll be decorating. You may love dense, oversized furniture, but that could overwhelm a small room.
Come up with a budget
By figuring out how much you can spend, it’ll be easier to prioritize the changes and additions you want to make. If you don’t have enough in your budget for a complete overhaul all at once, start with the necessities like window treatments, furniture and lighting. Then you can always make additions and tweaks as you have more of a budget to work with. Even if you have an unlimited budget, it’s a good idea to work from something – that way, you won’t overpay for items that you can get for a better deal.
Sketch it out
This may seem like a waste of time at first, but it’s extremely useful. You should never start on any home renovation project without putting your plan on paper first. If you don’t want to draw it out by hand, there are a lot of free floor plan programs online. Draw the plan to scale. That way, you won’t purchase too much furniture or wind up with too much blank space. Without a plan, you’re bound to just buy whatever you like without any idea of where or how it’s going to fit into the room.
Choose a color palette
Some designers suggest that your color scheme should be influenced by the flooring. Other interior decorators say to start with a piece of art or a unique piece of furniture and design your palette around that. Either way, the point is to start with a focal point that you like, whether it’s a framed photo or the rug on the floor. Choose one or two main colors and then decorate the rest of the room in neutrals. Ideally, your investment pieces will be in neutral colors so that you can change the color palette easily in the future.
Consider the lighting
How the room is lit plays a large role in its appearance. Plus, some rooms have to be more functional than others, like an office or study room for your kids. If you want the room to be relaxing, use low wattage light bulbs and flameless candles or lanterns. Bedrooms benefit from blackout curtains because you can get a good night’s rest without any light getting in from outside. If you’re displaying art in the room, you may want track lighting aimed at the piece.
Even if you’ve decorated rooms in the past, don’t always retreat into what you’re comfortable with. Try out different elements and styles to find a new setting that you love.
