Tips To Ensure Your Home Appliances Last Longer And Work Well

Home appliances are expensive and you shouldn't have to purchase new appliances any sooner than necessary.

To keep your appliances running as smoothly as possible and have them last longer, check out the following tips.

-------------------------------------

Air Conditioning Units

Many homeowners neglect to protect their central cooling systems during the winter months, and this can lead to premature wear and tear on the unit. One option many consider is to cover units to prevent condensation from getting inside the machine. It’s important to remember that units should never be covered in anything made from vinyl or tarp. These materials tend to trap moisture and this can speed up rusting and wear down the interior parts of the air conditioner. A number of companies make special covers to allow units to "breathe" to keep this from occurring. Custom covers for your AC units can be customized to fit your personal style and the exact model of air conditioner you own.

Refrigerators

Most people clean out their refrigerator every once in a while, but many forget to clean the condenser coil. This part of the refrigerator is located under the kick plate, which can be easily removed, and is responsible for allowing heat to be released.

When the condenser coil is clogged up or covered by dirt, and debris, the machine has to work harder to stay at the correct temperature inside. You can use a vacuum or even a brush to remove any build up on the condenser coils. This should be done at least once a year but more frequently if there are pets in the house.

Washing Machines

Keeping washing machines running smoothly starts by leaving the door open between uses to prevent mold growth. Mold can also be discouraged by running the hot cycle every once in a while if you usually use the cold cycle. It’s also important to use the right amount of detergent to avoid damaging the washing machine.

Dryers

Before using the dryer, remember to clean out the lint trap. This should be vacuumed once a year or more, depending on the frequency of dryer use. Don’t forget to unplug the dryer first. The dryer exhaust can also get clogged up and aside from making your dryer less efficient, it is also quite unsafe as it is a fire hazard. This vent should be cleaned professionally once a year to remove any lint buildup. You can clean it out yourself in most cases by loosening the clamp and removing it off the back of the dryer carefully. It’s easy to vacuum this out and then reattach it to the dryer.

Garbage Disposals

While garbage disposals often seem like an easy way to get rid of anything unwanted in terms of kitchen scraps, that is not always the case. Don’t put anything large or tough through your garbage disposal, like bones, and take a look with a flashlight every once in a while to see if anything is caught in it, especially if it seems clogged. If you can see that something is stuck in it, never use your hands to remove it. Always use tongs to fish anything out.

Ovens and Stoves

Wiping down and cleaning off any grime or grease from the oven and stove after use can really cut down on wear and tear. Oven performance can also be improved by replacing a cracked seal. A cracked or damaged seal can cause up to one fifth of an oven’s heat to be lost during use.

By keeping up routine maintenance with these tips, you can help your appliances last longer and run smoother.
