Difference Between a Duvet Cover and Comforter

Difference Between a Duvet Cover and Comforter

The difference is easy enough to understand, but the real question is which is better? The right choice depends on your personal needs. For instance, do you want to avoid your laundry room as much as possible? Do you make your bed in the mornings or leave it as is? Consider these questions as you make your decision.

What Is a Duvet?

Duvets are soft flat bags typically filled with down feathers. Though, wool or synthetic fibers are also common fillings. Generally, duvets will be white or beige and are enclosed within the duvet cover. This type of bedding is normally sold individually and can be found in all bed sizes. Duvets are very warm because down feathers act as very effective insulators. Sheet sets and all other bed materials tend to be bought separately.

What Is a Duvet Cover?

Think of the duvet as the pillow and the duvet cover as the pillowcase. The cover acts as a protective layer and usually has buttons or a zipper on one end to keep the duvet securely inside. Because the cover like the duvet is sold individually, you can easily change up the look of your room. Get a few different cases and you can have a red bed one day and zebra the next.

What Is a Comforter?

A comforter is like a thick, fluffy blanket. Most are filled with a synthetic fiber, so they may not be as warm as the competitor. However, comforters are found in bed sets, which can make decorating a bedroom easier and quicker. If you move constantly or have growing children, you can give their bedding a make over with a single purchase.

What’s the Difference in Cost and Care?

On cost, comforters are the winner. Because they are made with cheaper synthetic materials and are usually part of a bed-in-a-bag bundle, these large blankets are better for your wallet. Duvets are more expensive, but they tend to last longer. Plus, you don’t have to worry about fitting the entire thing into your washing machine. Just take the cover off, wash it, and put it back on.

If you want more of an investment, consider duvets and duvet covers. They provide great warmth and are easier to maintain. Though, if you want a bundle deal with a fun design, try comforters instead. Now that you know the difference between the options, choose what is best for your bedroom set.
