5 Home Remodeling Projects Under $500

5 Home Remodeling Projects Under $500
  • Opening Intro -

Sometimes your home just needs a facelift, but the budget is tight.

There are some projects, for both inside and out, that can give your home a fresh look for $500 or less.

All price estimates are from the 2014 remodeling cost vs value survey.

Brighten the Kitchen

A gallon or two of paint can instantly brighten the room and give it a completely different appearance. While replacing cabinets is an expensive project, painting the cabinets is economical and doable. Remove the cabinet doors, start with a coat of primer, then paint with the color of your choice to create the kitchen you have always wanted. Pick out new hardware, and, if you are handy with a table saw, add a strip of crown molding to the top of the cabinets for a custom look.

If you still have a little change in your pocket, replace the faucet and handles on the sink, to match the finish of your new cabinet hardware. This project may cost between $150 and $300 for good quality hardware at your local home improvement store.

Bathroom Update

Brighter is better! One way to update the bathroom for $500 or less is to upgrade the lighting. A new lighting fixture can cost as little as $50, or as much as $300, depending on your taste. A dimmer switch is a nice feature to add, so the room can be bright for task lighting, or soft for a relaxing bubble bath. Remember, good lighting makes a room better without any additional changes.

You have enough left from your $500 budget to add a fresh, new shower curtain, a matching set of towels, a new rug, and some storage features. A new brushed nickel shelf over the toilet, and some decorative baskets to hold supplies are a nice touch.

Window Wonder

It’s easy to update any living space, such as your living room or family room, by changing the window treatments. Get rid of the old, faded drapery, ditch the old, dusty mini-blinds, and open the room with new, budget-friendly faux wood blinds or shutters. Replace the old curtain rod with a contemporary style and new curtains. Let the light shine in! Your room will feel bigger and will look more inviting.

Pick up the Porch

Your porch should say “Welcome” to friends and family. Freshen up the concrete floor by painting the porch with a good exterior paint designed for that purpose at $30-$45 per gallon. If your porch is wooden, add a coat of paint, then stencil a rug pattern or a design for interest. Update the trim with low maintenance PVC or decorative wooden rails, hang flower baskets, and replace the exterior light fixture. Your entrance will look brand-new.

Do a Clean-up Job

Your home’s curb appeal can go up 100% for an investment of $500 or less. First, improve the lawn by sowing grass seed and regularly mowing the lawn. Check for bare spots that may need more attention. Give your fence a good once-over. Are there missing or broken boards? A quick $50 repair can raise your home’s value by thousands. Rent a paint sprayer and freshen the finish on the fence. Mend cracks or broken areas in your driveway or walk, then pressure wash the entire driveway or walkway to make it all look brand new.

Each of these projects can be done in one weekend, and for $500 or less. A little work will pay off in the enjoyment your home affords you, and the increase in its value.
