Do You Need a Pool Maintenance Service?

Do You Need a Pool Maintenance Service?
  • Opening Intro -

I’ve heard the question from a number of my friends over the years, “Why don’t you and Ed get a pool maintenance service?” It’s a great question.

Everyone knows that if you install a swimming pool, you will have to maintain it – or have someone do it for you? So what’s involved?

How much work do you want to do?

That’s really the essential question. If you’re like me, you prefer to do things yourself. I checked out services when we first installed our pool, and decided I’d like to see how much was involved. For me, it wasn’t that much. For someone else, the regular upkeep on a family swimming pool is more than they want to tackle.

While it’s not a lot of work, it’s like owning a horse – they have to be fed every day, and someone has to make sure it gets done. What is the downside of “not getting around” to pool maintenance? Well, let’s see – you can get algae in the pool. You get water that is out of balance chemically, and the kids start complaining that “it’s too much chlorine.” The kids could get sick from water that’s not properly chlorinated.  The pump gets clogged, and then someone has to clean it out. The possibilities are numerous.

How much can you afford?

This one is a bit tricky for me. If you have the money to install a family swimming pool, but don’t budget in enough for maintenance expenses, things are a bit out of balance. It’s like getting a luxury car and then having to skimp and get budget tires for it. Granted, there are going to be maintenance costs whether you do it yourself, or have a service do it for you. But you can save some money if you do it yourself.

How much time do you have

This question arises from the previous one. If you have the money, and don’t have the time, a maintenance service is the way to go. But Ed and I make our regular pool maintenance time into a sort of pleasurable project. We schedule it when the kids aren’t home, so they’re not around potentially harmful pool chemicals.

We have a list of things to do that we check off before we’re through. We’re very thorough, and we make sure it all gets done before we stop. That way, when Ed’s big game comes on TV, he’s not looking over at me with a guilty expression – we both know all the chores are handled.

How organized are you?

I am very organized. Just ask Ed – he’ll laugh and just shake his head. I use Google calendar to schedule things in my life. I have to – I have to get kids to school, soccer practice and other activities. So I just add in the pool maintenance to the list of things that need to happen, and plug it into the schedule.

My friend Nancy – I think she’d be a great candidate for a pool maintenance service, because she’s just not very organized – she’ll freely admit it. She can go to the grocery store with a list, and come home without half the items. If she had to maintain a swimming pool, I’d hesitate to go over and swim in it. Some people are just that way. If you are like that – get a maintenance service. You’ll be more relaxed.

How good are you with household projects?

If you’re the type person who is not good with fix it chores around the house – like repairing the fence, or even doing a little paint job – then maybe a pool maintenance service is for you. My husband Ed really enjoys home projects. For him, there’s a sense of accomplishment from fixing things, or from something like balancing the pH in the pool. I don’t know why he thinks that’s so fun, but he does. Now – he’s not the most organized person in the world, so I sometimes have to remind him “it’s pool day,” but once I do, he gets right into it.

In truth, the question of “Do I need a pool maintenance service?” depends on who is asking the question. It’s really up to the people who own the pool to determine what best fits their needs. Yes, a pool will require some maintenance, but however that gets handled, the payoff is to watch splashing and joyful kids (and husbands) enjoying family swim time.
