Renovation Inspiration: Lighting

Renovation Inspiration: Lighting
  • Opening Intro -

One important home improvement project that is easy to undertake, cost effective and can yield important changes is your home's lighting.

For the exterior of your home, flood lights can light up your home and provide an important safety advantage.

On the interior of your home, lighting can do wonders to brighten up a room or offer subtleties to reflect your mood.

-------------------------------------

In any case, lighting can do you wonders, but you’ll want to keep the following in mind:

Focal point

A light fixture can become a focal point, offering some much needed drama in a room devoid of any defining characteristics. Formal dining rooms and eat-in kitchens are excellent places where a chandelier or other light fixture can be placed. Now in fashion are birdcage chandeliers that create a stunning, if not much talked about visual statement wherever these are found. Use your imagination to create a fixture that is unique, unusual or simply reflects your personal tastes.

Darkness eradicator

Short, winter days mean your home has less natural light to rely on for many months. Some homes have areas that are prone to darkness with not enough natural light for much of the day. These dark recesses aren’t always welcome by homeowners who may choose to place a lamp nearby to provide the necessary lighting. If a floor lamp gets in the way, consider installing adjustable track lighting to penetrate the dark areas. Under cabinet lighting in kitchens, recessed lighting and dimmers can make a difference too.

Lighting as an accessory

The way you view your lighting should match how you decorate your home. Just as home decor and accessories are important to you, lighting should play an important part too. In fact, lighting IS an accessory! Your lighting style can reflect your mood and it can also be changed with your mood. The color and wattage of the bulb you use, the fixture or the lamp shade can impact your room greatly. That pricey lamp doesn’t have to be replaced, but its pleated shade could stand replacement to give your room a fresh look.

Set a mood

Lighting can effect your mood and can also provide a mood. For example, a well-lit walkway leading from your driveway or path to your front door can show visitors that they are welcome as well as safe. Inside, when you choose soft, ambient lighting you create a comfortable atmosphere and eradicate shadows that some may find intimidating. Accent lighting is the perfect source to highlight something important in your home such as artwork or other object of note.

The wonderful thing about lighting is that it is both cost effective and has a big impact. Whether engaging in a complete home renovation or a minor update, changes in lighting can make a big difference. Experiment with what is available to help you strike a mood that satisfies you.
