When to Buy Kitchen Appliances

When to Buy Kitchen Appliances
  • Opening Intro -

The best time to buy your kitchen appliances isn't just when you need a new stove, a refrigerator, a dishwasher or a microwave.

How to find bargains on major appliances.

Unless your major appliance breaks down and dies, you’re better off waiting until prices drop, trends that happen a few times each year.

Holiday season

— From Thanksgiving to Christmas and on through New Year’s Day, shoppers are looking for Christmas presents and kitchen appliances are not typically on anyone’s shopping list. Thus, to move inventory, major retailers and manufacturers are pushing new washers, dryers, and major kitchen appliances. Sales often continue into the new year when so-called “white sales” kick in.

Back to school

— Late summer and early fall have the same “downer” on large appliance sales as the holiday season does with consumers shopping for back to school items. To keep traffic flowing, you’ll find stepped up advertising that will last until mid-September and pick up again around Thanksgiving.

Whenever promos are offered

— Promotional prices can pop up at any time of the year advises Consumer Reports. CR notes that Sears employs a “hi-low” strategy, whereby the retailing giant offers select appliances at low prices and marks up others. The consumer organization advises consumers to sign up for e-mail alerts and keep their eyes on specials, including newspaper circulars.

You’ll save more money if you need to buy two or more appliances from one manufacturer or retailer. If you’re upgrading the kitchen and want stainless steel appliances, then get a price quote on a package containing a refrigerator, stove and dishwasher. Include a microwave if that unit it built in. Consider adding in a new washer or dryer if those items need to be replaced too. Be prepared to haggle and get quotes from more than one retailer.

You can also shop online for appliances, avoiding fixed base retailers completely. Review appliances, compare prices and place your online order without ever leaving the comfort of your home.
