Notes:
- A French-born lady named Bea Johnson coined the movement of a “zero waste home” back in 2008 as a means to radically reduce (to zero) her family’s waste. Basically the focus was and is on waste prevention and not waste management.
- Bea Johnson now resides in the USA but her zero waste movement is something that has translated all over the world and as a result, she has produced a couple of books on the topic, maintains a popular blog and is a regular speaker across the globe on how others can follow her in the movement.
- Waste is all around us and with materialism at its height, it’s difficult to avoid unnecessary clutter building up in our homes. However, lots of what we see in the shops and online is made from single use plastic or it is fast fashion which is often referred to as “disposable” because it is so cheap.
- All of these factors spell concern for the environment as a whole because landfills are piling up all over the world as the world’s appetite for this type of merchandise continues to grow and grow.
- A zero waste goal for our homes might be far-reaching and seem unattainable but the key thing to remember is that every step counts; even if we change one behavior and the behavior of our family every so often, this will mount up. Furthermore, we are educating our children about this goal and that can only be beneficial in the longer term.
- The guys at EZ Living Interiors have put together this useful infographic that fully explains the whole zero waste movement. It outlines the reasons for chasing zero waste; it details the hierarchy of zero waste; it highlights the reasons why we should seek to achieve a zero waste home and it also includes 5 actionable ways that we can aim to reduce waste. Check out the full infographic below for more.
