Smart lighting
Notes:
- The future trends in home improvement are smart home technologies and everything internet (IoT). [same win] These “future” technologies are somewhat limited currently, but new gadgets are being developed and priced low enough where future smart appliances connected to the internet will be readily available and functional.
- One particular technology will be smart lighting and other smart electrical controls. Future homes will have all of it’s electrical wiring smart; but you can add switches and outlets that function in the same way.
- Using these smart switches and outlets, you can connect them to your internet home hub and/or to the internet cloud. From there you can automate and control your electrical devices from a central hub, home assistant (alexa or google home), and through your mobile device.
- With a voice command or using your finger on a mobile device, you can do the following:
- turn on and turn off home lighting
- automate switch timing to turn on/off lights at designated times
- dim or change the color of LED light bulbs attached to smart devices
- turn on/turn off/and automate schedules for media and audio units
- turn on/turn off any home appliances connected to smart outlets

Smart home security
Notes:
- The next smart home technology that is getting better by the year is home security. What you have is smart “wireless” security systems [same win} that can be control via a hub or mobile device no matter where you are located.
- Wireless systems are easy to setup and come with cameras so that you can monitor your home 24/7. Place these cameras on the perimeter of the home for outside surveillance; place them in interior areas and rooms so that you can monitor your family while traveling from home.
- Some of the “smart” home security systems to consider:
- wireless systems with sensors for doors and windows
- surveillance cameras for outside perimeter and garage area
- interior monitors for entryways and bedroom
- video doorbell cameras for monitor porch and front door
- smart smoke alarms, carbon monoxide, air and water detectors for safety
- These systems can alert you via wireless if any security trigger has been breeched. They can also be setup for a monthly fee to local police and fire responders.
- Imagine having this additional safety when on vacation, out of town for the weekend, or away at work during the day. It will give you the comfort you need knowing that your home is being watched while you are away.

Smart mirrors
Notes:
- Now why would you need a smart mirror – what use does a smart mirror provide? Consider this! You are getting ready in the morning for work – prepping yourself to look professional. As you prep and shave, wouldn’t it be nice to do the following by saying mirror mirror on the wall:
- what is the current temperature and weather forecast
- give me the latest news and sport highlights
- play me some music while I get ready in the morning
- what is my schedule for today
- assign a list of to-dos and send it to my spouse or children
- send an alarm for the kids to get up
- show me how to prep myself in a certain way
- Of course, these mirrors are limited at the moment. But they are getting smarter by the year. Once you have IoT in your home, the smart mirror will become an important element in home automation.
- Can you imagine how more productive you will become if you could spend that prep time in front of the mirror to doing some to-dos or planning. Or maybe you just want the mirror to look at yourself – so ask it increase or dim the lighting – ask it to defog so that mirror will be perfect once you get out of the shower. All of this with a simple command. Truly, your personal “mirror mirror on the wall … who is the …”

- schedule or open/close the window blinds throughout the home
- schedule or turn the robotic vacuum to begin vacuuming
- set the clothes washer to begin wash – or the dryer to start a cycle

Smart networking
Notes:
- Now that you have all of these smart items – smart switches, smart security, smart mirrors, smart appliances, and other smart devices – it’s time to connect everything to a central hub for wireless and home assistant control.
- The hub acts a control monitor – connected directly to the internet and the cloud. So as you network these smart devices to the hub, you can control your smart home using a home assistant, a control pad, laptop, desktop, your phone, or any mobile device no matter where you are located – either upstairs, at your neighbors, or half way around the world.
