• About St. Patrick’s Day

  March 17th is known as St. Patrick’s Day. A day when everyone should have a touch of green upon themselves for good luck and the avoidance of being pinched. But technically, it’s a celebration of the patron Saint Patrick – a 5th century missionary who brought Christianity to Ireland. He served as a Bishop there, and was partly responsible for the Christianization of the Picts and Anglo-Saxons.

• And the Leprechaun

  The legend of the Leprechaun is also part of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. According to legend, the Leprechauns are mischievous little creatures that like to make shoes and store their gold coins in an iron pot that is nicely hidden. If you capture a Leprechaun, you are given three wishes to let them go. But be careful, those wishes could be tricky that can bring you bad luck.

• So what to do on St. Patrick’s Day:

  • wear a spot of green upon yourself – perhaps a shamrock of other green material
  • celebrate the day with Irish-inspired foods like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and Irish soda bread.
  • visit the pubs for a pint of green ale or beer
  • enjoy the festivities that celebrate Irish traditions.

Notes:

• Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic sea situated west of the Island of Great Britain. Ireland is part of the United Kingdom with a population of approximately 4.8 million. The geography has low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain with several navigable rivers. Its known for it’s green, lush vegetation and rock line shores.

• Some historical facts about Ireland:

  • the Celtics from central Europe begun settling in the area around 700 BC
  • Viking invaders began raids into Ireland around 800 Ad forming many permanent settlements that eventually become the major cities of Ireland
  • the Normans who had taken control of England invaded Ireland and made it an English territory
  • England’s conversion to protestantism created a rift with Ireland who remained Roman Catholic. These tensions escalated that eventually led to Irish Independence.
  • several Northern counties remained under British control, creating skirmishes between Protestants and Catholics that led to escalations
  • the Good Friday Peace agreement in 1999 brought an end to the fighting in Northern Ireland; but total Irish independence is still being discussed.

What’s the climate like

• The Geography

  Ireland is known for it’s lush, green meadows, farms, and by-ways. You are also greeted with rocky, cliff terrains along the western shores and sandy beaches on the east. The Island has multiple rivers that have been carved by glacier formations.

• The climate is mild with the average temperatures ranging in the 40’sF (6 degrees Celsius) during the winter months to 55-65F (12.8-18.6 C) during the summer. So that is why you see most Irish wearing a raincoat throughout the year. You never can forecast when a sunny day turns to rain. It is always best to be prepared when you go out.

• About Farming

  Most Irish farms are small and run by individual families. The land and climate favors the growth of grass that is perfect for livestock farming that include cattle, dairy farming, sheep, and pig farms. The pastoral farming industry is supported by the high demand for livestock in Britain and continental Europe.

Major places to see in Ireland

Notes:

• Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland with about 1.1 million people. It is situated on the eastern coast at the mouth of the River Liffey with a large port for shipping. It is home to St Patrick’s Cathedral, founded in 1191.
• Belfast in Northern Ireland is the Island’s second largest cit with about 600K habitants. It was the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, the infamous Titanic that struck an iceberg in 1912.
