  • Mulch helps conserve water when you’re watering your garden, but mulch itself can be expensive. But there are alternatives—including your yard itself.
  • Scattering lawn clippings such as grass, pine needles, and leaves onto your flower beds will help retain water while also providing nutrients. Compost and newspaper will also work. Layer either in thin layers and cover with topsoil and water.
