• Hardie board is also called cement-board siding. It is made up of wood cellulose and cement to create a more permanent installation than you’ll find with vinyl siding. It is not unheard of to have a 50-year warranty on Hardie board due to its tough construction.
• Hardie board requires a carbide drill bit as opposed to a steel drill bit for drilling. Because of the combination of wood cellulose and cement, splits can occur in the Hardie board if the correct bits are not used.
• Metal brackets are the most common way of supporting a flower box mounted on Hardie board. Brackets should be leveled and have three screw holes above the horizontal bracket piece. The top and bottom hole will take 2 1/2″ screws, while the middle hole needs to be 3″ in length.
• Although this may seem sufficient for bearing a load, it is imperative that each screw goes into a stud. There should be a sill plate below the window and beams supporting the window, but note that sometimes beams can be off center.

• Brick can offer great support for flower boxes. However, without the right tools and materials, a project can end in failure. A hammer drill is necessary to drill through masonry. It provides the right percussion on the masonry bits to make an adequate hole.
• Four L-shaped brackets should be used for added support. With the correct drill and masonry bits, it can still be a bit of a chore if you are not familiar with masonry.

• Know the difference. A hammer drill is still necessary, as are 1/4″ plastic anchors and exterior-grade screws, 1 1/4″ long. You can also use masonry screws. Try to find a support beam for best results.
