Do You Have a Mudroom? And Why Do You Need One?

Enjoy the following pic ideas. Don't forget to leave us a quick comment below.

And please share this post within your social networks.

  • Mudrooms! The must-need room in many new home constructions. It provides a staging area for family members to remove shoes and other dirty or wet clothing before entering the home.

But what about your home now? Can or should you convert your back entrance into a staged mudroom? And why?

First thing, what is a mudroom?

Notes:

  • Staging Area:

Remember playing outside as a kid when your mom called you into the house – what were her first words?

  • “Take off your shoes! They are muddy and wet! I don’t want that mud coming into the house!”

  • That is the purpose of the mudroom, a staging area where the family can undress their dirty or wet clothes and shoes before entering into the home. A place where the mud can be removed and cleaned up within a confined area.
  • It is also the room where you and family members can remove and store dirty clothes and safety gear after working in the yard, fixing the auto, doing construction, or making repairs to the home.
  • But there are other helpful mudroom uses that make home management that much easier:
    • Place to Store Shoes:

Coming in from the outside can trek in dirt and other unsanitary stuff that gets on floors and other furniture pieces. Let’s face it!, the bottom sole of the shoe is not clean after walking the streets, school grounds, shopping centers, and other not-so-clean places.

    • It’s a good habit to take off your shoes before entering the home. The mudroom is the place where that can take place. Each family member can be assigned a cubbyhole spot or shoe shelf where shoes, sandals and other footwear can be stored and retrieved whenever entering or exiting the home.

    • Place to Store School Items:

The general habit of kids coming home from school is to throw backpacks and other school supplies all over the house. How many times have you had to remove backpacks for the sitting area?

    • The mudroom can be used as the staging area for storing backpacks, school materials, and other school stuff for easy storage and retrieval. And more importantly, you won’t hear the crying words “where’s my backpack” when they are running late for school.

    • Place to Store Sporting Equipment and Clothes:

Sporting equipment includes golf clubs, field mitts and balls, tennis rackets, and all sorts of play ground stuff for the backyard and school. Most of these sporting items can be stored in the mudroom (or the garage for bigger items) for easy retrieval.

    • And don’t forget those sporting clothes after practice that can be removed and stored in the mudroom rather than taking them up into the bedroom.

    • Place to Store Winter Gear and Summer Beach-Going:

You know what winter brings out – the winter coats, scarfs, gloves, boots, and everything in-between to keep everyone warm. The mudroom is the perfect spot for storing and maintaining winter gear and other winter-related needs – including wet gear and boots/shoes.

    • And for the summer – swim wear, beach towels, sandals, umbrellas, and beach-going stuff. The mudroom can be used for all season when the seasons arrive.

    • Place to Manage Pet Needs:

Mudrooms can be converted into pet-friendly areas for all your home pets. For pet cats, the mudroom is the perfect spot to place the litter box. For dogs, the mudroom is where they can rest when no one is home.

    • If you have a dog, you might consider installing a doggy wash station for bathing dogs. Also add a doggy door for home exit and entrance. The mudroom is the perfect room for managing pet needs.

Where should the mudroom be located?

Notes:

  • The mudroom should be located where family members enter – or where they are trained to enter – the home. The obvious location would be on the front, side or back side of the house with easy access using the driveway or pathway to the entrance. You must set house rules that all family members must go through the mudroom before coming into the house.
  • The mudroom should also be available from the garage or carport. When family members return from work or school after parking their car in the garage or driveway, they can easily enter the mudroom from the garage for shoe, work, play and other removal.
    • How About the Front Entry:

You will find some homes using the front entry as the mudroom area. But the purpose of the mudroom is keeping the clutter and dirt separate from the home. It may become a constant battle keeping the entry way tidy and clean for guest use.

  • If you are looking to remodel or add an addition, consider these points:
    • keep it simple – meaning, allowing for easy access either from the garage, front entry, the backyard, or walking around to the side of the house
    • make sure to add a pathway to the access – make it wide enough so it can be easily noted when it snows
    • provide multiple access points from the outside – garage – and side area
    • decorate it with inviting decor that welcomes them home
    • consider adding a pet door on the backside door for pet exit and entrance from the backyard.
  • Looking at sample locations for a mudroom:

Laundry Room Design And Functionality

third “photo remodeling” idea

Mudroom should have cabinet storage and hooks

Notes:

  • Place to Hang It:

Not all “slightly dirty” clothes need to be thrown into the laundry – they can be used again for play and work before a final wash. Install segmented cabinet space with hooks; it’s the perfect spot to store those dirty items to be used once again.

  • These cabinets also function as storage for sporting goods, school backpacks, shoes and other misc. items – an area to hang wet clothes to dry after coming in from the rain or snow. The bottom pull-out bins can be used for shoe storage.
  • And during the winter, use the cabinets for hanging coats, gloves and other winter wear.
  • Assign It Out:

If space allows, purchase or build storage units that can be segmented by family member – there own personal storage cabinet, covey hole, and storage drawer. A place to store everything for easy find and organization – and more importantly, a place to manage their stuff for future needs and use.

  • You can use hyacinth baskets with their assigned name. That way they can store what they like and keep the room organized for easy find.
  • They will need to be trained on keeping their assigned location looking nice. Kids (and adults) can be messy at times; so setup the room rules upfront on how items are to be stored and maintained.

fourth “photo remodeling” idea

mudroom addition

copyright image by https://123rf.com/

It’s a place to clean up

Notes:

  • Wash-Up Sink:

It is not only the clothes that get dirty, but the hands, face, feet, and other body parts. The wash basin allows the kids to wash up before bringing their dirty hands into the home. It also gives you a nice place to clean up after working in the garden.

  • Make sure you purchase a utility sink that is deep enough to keep cleaning-up contained. A shallow sink will have mud splashing out onto the counter and floor. The deep sink will also allow for soaking dirty clothes before washing and for cleaning garden tools, paint brushes, and other household needs.
  • Add a Bathroom:

If space and the budget allows, install a small bathroom with wash basin, toilet and perhaps a small shower stall. The toilet is most needed – especially for kids playing outside when they need to go. A quick in-and-out after using the bathroom will keep dirt within the mudroom.

  • A small shower stall – if it can be added – can be used by family members who can get cleaned up without trekking inside to the bathroom. And it would be nice to have an extra shower stall when you have extended family or guests visiting.
  • One other addition that is becoming very popular is a doggy wash – a enclosed area where you can easily wash the dog without using the wash areas in the house. You can easily combine the doggy station with the shower stall – a place to wash and shower as needed.

What’s missing

Notes:

  • Make It a Combo Laundry/Mudroom Area:

The basic mudroom has all the elements needed to help manage the home – shoe storage – hooks – cabinet storage – wash-up basin. But the mudroom could be combined with a laundry room to make it a place to easily collect and wash/dirty dirty clothes and other household items. If you have laundry facility upstairs, then this laundry room/mudroom could be become the laundry room for the downstairs.

  • If you are installing plumbing for the utility sink – and the bathroom and wash station – then why not run the plumbing for laundry. Or you can convert an existing down laundry room into a combo laundry/mudroom.
  • The mudroom/laundry area could also function as a utility room for mail collection and family scheduling and management.
    • Making It Functional:

Converting one of your existing rooms (or making a room addition) into a laundry room area might be too much of a cost sacrifice if the room area is be large.

    • But you can combine this area into a laundry room and utility room for household management. Let’s analyze how.
    • view post: Another Laundry Room – This Time with Utility
  • FINAL OBSERVATION:

The mudroom is must-have room for active families. You can convert part of your garage area into a staging area – or part of the back-home entrance.

  • The goal is to have staging area for cleaning up before entering into the home; and providing storage hooks for clothes, backpacks, shoes and other stuff to keep everything organized for easy retrieval.
