Here are a few calls you’ll have to make before you’re ready to break ground:
Excavation
Every in-ground pool starts as a hole in the ground. Once you have the specs for the type of pool you are building, like depth and shape, call an excavation contractor for a quote. The contractor will discuss a number of things they will need from you before they can break ground, particularly access to the excavation area. Will they need to take down fences in order to get their equipment in? Taking the fences down yourself is a good way to save money on your project. The less time the crew spends on your site, the less you’ll have to pay.
Concrete Pumping
This is where you have to make some final, lasting decisions. Assuming that you chose a concrete pool rather than one lined in vinyl or fiberglass, you will need to talk to a contractor from one of your local concrete pumping companies. The majority of concrete pools these days are created by blasting concrete against a reinforcing structure or mesh. Some are poured using forms similar to a home foundation, though these are less common. Your concrete contractor can help you choose the one that is right for your site and budget.
Plumbing
Obviously, the most basic element of a swimming pool is water. Pipes and pumps will need to be installed to circulate the water to and from your filter. Make sure you contact a plumber with experience installing and maintaining pools. This plumber’s number is one you’re going to want to keep around—if you ever experience a problem, they’ll know the ins and outs of your pumping and plumping system.
Electrical
Your pool’s mechanical systems will need power running to them, and that means you’ll need an electrician. Underground lines will have to be run from your home and a new circuit will need to be added to your electrical panel. To allow you to enjoy your pool in the evening, you will probably also need more lighting installed nearby. Make sure all the digging you’ll have to do for your electrical lines is done during excavation, ideally with your electrician present.
Landscaping
All that digging is going to turn your yard into a mess. To get it back into shape, you’ll need the services of a landscaping crew. A landscaping company will work with you to design gardens and plantings to suit your new outdoor space. If you have other landscaping projects due on your property, this is a good time to get them all done at once.
A professionally installed pool in your yard can really make a hot summer much more bearable. With a few calls to the right tradespeople, you can make sure your new pool is a welcoming place for your friends and family to beat the heat.
