Analyse Fluorescent Fixture and Remove Cover
Place a step stool or a ladder under the fixture. Do not forget to use working gloves and protective eye goggles for the prevention of injury, in case the light bursts. Check out the light fixture for determining how the covering of the light has been attached.
- Some of the covers have metal square brackets that are fixed by screws.
- There are some that lift out of the place, especially in the drop ceiling installations.
- Some decorative fixtures are covered by plastic clips which are integrated into the covers.
- Another common type that is found in majority of homes with drop ceiling is the fixture that is attached to the ceiling rail instead of wooden beam. This is generally used for commercial application. The cover is attached to the fixture with the help of a hinged metal frame having metal clips on one side.
Removal of Fixture Covers Based on Kind of Fixture
- For mounts with metal brackets, you have to turn the screws in a counter-clockwise manner with the help of a screwdriver. Thereafter, pull the brackets and cover free from the fixture.
- For drop ceilings, you have to press upward on the cover and then slide it out of place into the adjacent tile in the ceiling.
- For the utility or decorative type, make sure that you gently twist the cover with your hand to pull it free.
- In case, you are working with troffer fixture then you have to place one hand on the cover and turn the metal clips downward with a screwdriver or your finger. Now lower your hand for allowing the cover to open.
Turn on the fluorescent lights for determining which tube has to be replaced if the light fixture has several tubes. It is always better to replace the tubes in the fixture because they tend to have similar longevity and it is only a matter of time before the other lights have to be replaced.
Clean the inner surface of the cover with the help of paper towels and all-purpose cleaner. Though this step is optional, it can help in removing dust, insects, and other environmental contaminants. This will allow more light to pass through the cover.

Turn off the fluorescent lights and allow it to cool for about 30 minutes or more. Since you are not exposed to bare wires, switching off the power is enough. Now, you have to turn the tube by one-quarter with the help of your fingers and pull it downwards. If the tube does not come out easily then you have to turn one of it in the opposite direction and thereafter pull it again. If the tube still cannot be removed push it to one side. However, make sure not to apply too much pressure as it might lead to breakage.
Take a look at the markings on the tube and write it down for the purpose of ordering the same. If you are unable to find the marking, you can wrap the tube in a bubble wrap and take it to a hardware store. Now, install the new light by simply linking the two prongs in the socket and turn the tube a quarter for a turn. You are all done with replacement!
