Use Large Prints

Taking older furniture and sprucing it up with prints, or using prints on newer furniture turns it into a “larger-than-life” piece. It’s fun for kids, because they like the large prints. But, it’s also appropriate for adults, adding flare to an otherwise stuffy piece.
Rebuild From Old
One of the coolest things you can do to furniture is breathe new life into it. If you find an old table at a yard sale, for example, try rebuilding it with these folding table legs and new runners. Sand down all the rough spots and stain it.
Or, if it’s a true antique, take it to a woodworking shop or a dealer to have it professionally restored. Some of these pieces are made of classic materials that cannot be found anywhere at any price anymore. For example, your grandparents might have an old piece of furniture from the 1940s or ‘50s made of rock maple, or they might have a classic wrought iron something-or-other.
These are great building blocks for modern furniture.
Use Modern Upholstery On Traditional Furniture
Use modern upholstery for traditional pieces – what’s old is new again. You can take old formal or classic pieces and add something to make them feel more modern and relaxed. It used to be that most families had formal sitting rooms.
Of course, those days are gone, but the furniture remains, sometimes in old antique stores, sometimes in basements. If you’ve got an old piece, dust it off. Add some flare by having it redone by a professional upholster.
It shouldn’t cost you more than a few hundred dollars for even a large couch. Chairs can be done for much less, depending on what you want done.
Use Bold Accessories
Accessories can spice up an old room, or an entire home. If you’ve gone conservative on the paint colors, accessories are almost necessary to break up the drab. Use splashes of color to give your home a more vibrant feel. Accent pillows, for example, will turn a white room into something exciting.
You could also use accent walls to offset a taupe paint scheme. Is it a little 1990s? Sure, but it can still be done tastefully.

Bedrooms are notoriously difficult to do on the cheap. Here’s a reason why: almost everything in a bedroom is built for comfort. Comfort costs.
How to make it cheap: Make extensive use of blankets and corner throw-pillows from craft stores. Learn to love sitting on the floor when you’re not sleeping in your bed. Also, bring in a used table lamp or chandelier to add something special to the room.
