Your bedroom should be a place where you can rest and not be tempted to do work at the end of the day. If your room doesn’t make you feel relaxed, it may not be sleep-friendly.
However, your bedroom can be multi-purpose. Especially if you have limited space at home, you are probably using it as your office, study area, reading room, and so on.
The thing is, you also want a space where you can rest without distractions at night. How can you make your bedroom more sleep-friendly then?
Use Blackout Curtains or Blinds
When you use your room for other activities aside from sleeping, you probably like plenty of natural lighting coming in during the day. However, this is only good for daytime.
The days can be longer most especially during the summer, so light would still be pouring inside the room even if it’s nighttime already. We all know it’s harder to fall asleep when it is still bright.
What should you do if you like natural lighting, but this might also affect your bedtime routine? The compromise is to install blackout curtains and blinds. They effectively block out the sunlight when you don’t want it and you can draw them during the day to make your room brighter.
And an added bonus? Blackout curtains also make your room cooler as they block off the heat from the light as well – making your room more conducive for sleep.
Make Your Room Clutter-Free
One reason why you are distracted when you enter your bedroom at night? It may be because of the clutter all over the place.
You may have your stuff on the bed, on your side tables, even on your floor! When your room is in a state of disarray, you may be tempted to tidy up first instead of chilling already.
If you have your ongoing projects on display, you may also be tempted to work on them. Clutter can distract you from sleeping.
You can manage this by keeping your room clutter-free. Put clothes back in the closet, used clothes in the laundry. Put back things to where they were after using. Make it a habit to always tidy up so you won’t have to do it at the end of the day – when you are about to sleep.
Get some containers or bins where you could place your things and ongoing projects also. This way you lessen the distraction inside your bedroom. When you come in at night, there’s nothing like an orderly room to keep you relaxed.
Replace Your Bed
When was the last time you had your mattress replaced? Some people neglect this part as changing a mattress can be burdensome. You have to take note though that mattresses, even the best ones in the market, aren’t built to last forever.
A mattress is meant to be replaced every 7 to 10 years depending on the usage. Over the years, wear and tear would naturally happen to your mattress. It would eventually become uncomfortable for sleep.
If you use your mattress more than the recommended period also, it would become a nesting place of allergens, dust mites, and other organisms. You probably would lose sleep over allergy attacks and other respiratory diseases.
other valuable tips:
If you find it such a hassle to get a new mattress because of its size, purchase a mattress in a box. It’s just your usual mattress but it’s compressed into a smaller package for your convenience. Or just buy mattress online so you won’t have to go to the physical stores.
Replace the mattress when it is due already. When your mattress is comfortable and clean, you will sleep better and longer.
These are just a few tips to make your bedroom a better sleeping space. You can install blackout curtains, keep your room clutter-free, and replace your old mattress. How about you, how do you make your bedroom more conducive for sleep also?
