In order to do so, it’s vital that you create the perfect environment for your restful evenings.
It may be obvious that you want a space optimized for sleep, but knowing where to start may not be as obvious. Follow these tips to create the sleep haven of your dreams:
Be mindful of your paint choices
When designing the color scheme and theme of your bedroom you’ll have to make a choice between warm or cool tones.
Warm colors (like hues of red, orange, and yellow) may resonate with you in the evening and help you feel cozy, but these tones are also associated with heightened emotions of love, passion, and playfulness.
Being surrounded by intense warm tones may not create the best environment for your room.
Cooler tones (like hues of blue, green, and light purple) may be more appropriate for your bedroom as these colors make you feel calm and relaxed. Choose light paint colors in cool tones to avoid anything too harsh on your walls.
Account for any sound disruptions
Make sure when you’re designing your bedroom that you consider the space you’re choosing in your house. Picking an external room that backs up to a busy street or a sidewalk won’t be the best choice for a good night’s sleep. Be mindful in which room of your house is best suited for your bedroom.
To block out external noises, choose thick curtains to hang above your windows. For even more noise isolation, choose a bed frame that allows you to hang curtains around the perimeter. If curtains aren’t enough for you, try a white noise machine that provides a background noise for your sleep to mask any disruptive noises keeping you tossing and turning at night.
Cut out your electronics
If you enjoy binge watching your favorite show in bed this will be a difficult decision for you, but it’s important to eliminate the electronics from your bedroom that interfere with your sleep. The blue and green light emitted from a television will stimulate you at night and will likely lead to restless nights. To prevent the temptation of watching television close to bedtime, don’t even put one in your room.
If your phone is a temptation for you at nighttime as well, set up your charging station in the kitchen so you won’t have a reason to bring your phone in with you to sleep.

Pick your bed according to your needs…
Different mattresses are designed for different types of sleepers. To ensure you can get your best night’s sleep, you need to make sure you’re sleeping on the right mattress. Take the time to research how your sleeping style affects your mattress needs whether that be an innerspring, memory foam, or hybrid. Also consider the factors that are most important to you like spinal alignment, pressure relief, and motion transfer. Your sleep is personal, so your mattress should be too.
…And be thoughtful on placement
Consider where the best place will be for your bed when you cozy up for sleep each night. Placing your bed right beside a window where light may come in is a bad idea. Also avoid placing your bed directly below an air vent so you won’t be disturbed by a cold draft. Position your bed against a wall where you have a clear line of sight to the door to help you feel safe and relaxed at night.
Block out any light disturbances
Exposure to light can disturb your circadian rhythm and throw off your sleep cycle. This means, if you have disruptive lights in your room or outside your window, you won’t be getting the best quality of sleep possible.
If you’re having light issues within your room, unplug the electronics that may be illuminating your room like an alarm clock. If there’s an outside light issue, blackout curtains are the best options to prevent outside light pollution from entering your bedroom.
Improve Your IAQ

Better indoor air quality means you’ll be getting better sleep. Keep your room cleaned with natural products rather than toxic chemicals. You can also add a few plants to your bedroom to naturally purify the air and help eliminate air pollution. And don’t forget to keep a healthy level of humidity and use a humidifier if needed.
Declutter your space
Having a cluttered environment will cause you stress. When you go to lay down and get your 7-9 hours of sleep after a long day, the last thing you’ll want to be is stressed. Take a minimalist approach with your bedroom and only use the essentials to avoid cluttering your space.
