7 Tips to Extending Your Pool Season

7 Tips to Extending Your Pool Season
  • Opening Intro -

Pool season may be your favorite time of the year, but unless you have the right equipment, your fun in the sun will quickly come to a halt as summer turns to fall.

-------------------------------------

Let’s face it: Swimming in 60-degree weather isn’t exactly enjoyable. The length of your pool season all depends on the local climate, but you can extend your time in the pool if you invest in the right maintenance equipment. It’s all about keeping the water and the area around your pool warm and comfortable.

Use these tips to extend your home’s pool season and let the good times roll.

Install a Heat Pump or Gas Heater

You can’t enjoy the pool if the water dips below a certain temperature. Even if you don’t mind swimming around in cold water, your body will feel the difference.

After two hours in 60-degree water, your risk of drowning goes up to 50 percent. Those odds aren’t exactly comforting when you’re trying to relax in your backyard.

To make the most of your pool, try adding either a heat pump or a gas heater. While most people prefer gas heaters, they’re usually the most expensive option. Gas heaters are also incredibly convenient.

You can quickly heat up your pool just by flipping a switch, making them the perfect choice for the casual swimmer. Or you can try using a heat pump, which typically costs much less than a gas heater. It takes them a little longer to heat up your pool, but they will help you save money on your heating bills in the long run.

Put Your Heater on an Automatic Timer

If you’re constantly in the pool and you don’t have time to wait for a heat pump, try putting your pool heater on a timer. Just like your home’s thermostat, you can program the timer to make sure that the water is always the perfect temperature during peak swimming hours. You can turn the heater down at night to cut back on your energy costs.

Use a Solar Cover or Solar Rings

Now that you’ve added some much-needed warmth to your pool, you need to prevent that heat from escaping. Solar covers and rings are an effective way to lock in the warmth. A solar cover is a large plastic sheet that covers your pool so the heat can’t escape, all the while absorbing heat from the sun. The cover won’t contribute to your heating bills and it’s completely self-sufficient. You can add a pulley system to make it easier to roll up or deploy your solar cover.

You can also add solar rings to your pool as a time-saving alternative. These small magnetic pads float in the water just like a solar cover, locking in the heat. They don’t cover as much surface area as solar covers, but they tend to be cheaper and easier to deploy.

Set Up Heat Lamps Around the Pool

Even if the water in your pool is the perfect temperature, getting out of the water can be a challenge if the air outside is less than hospitable. To keep the area around your pool warm and comfortable, try installing some heat lamps on the deck. You and your guests can lounge around outside without getting the chills. They’re easy to use and shouldn’t cost more than a couple hundred dollars each. If you don’t want to spend too much, you can focus on heating a smaller portion of the deck.

Go with a Fire Pit

While heat lamps are easy to set up virtually anywhere, fire pits typically cost less and they won’t contribute to your heating bills. You can quickly dry yourself off after you get out of the pool and chill out next to the fire to stay warm. While fire pits can be limiting in terms of their reach, they create a soothing environment for you and your guests. You’ll be able to see more clearly around the pool and you can enjoy the crackling sounds of the fire.

Build a Pool Enclosure

You can breathe easy when you get out of the water if you’re willing to invest in a pool enclosure. From large glass houses to narrow openings that extend just over the water, pool enclosures surround you and your loved ones with warmth. You don’t have to worry about all the heat in your pool evaporating into the air and you can relax by the water without shivering uncontrollably.

While some of these enclosures can be costly, they can make the area around your pool feel like another room in the house. No one wants to spend all that money on a pool just to see it go to waste six or nine months out of the year. Investing in an enclosure is the best way to put your pool to good use

Invest in an Outdoor Spa

If you’re not a huge swimming fan, but you still want to enjoy a relaxing dip in the water, you can always set up your own at-home spa. Adding a hot tub to your pool area dramatically increases the functionality of the space. If the pool water lowers your body temperature, you can quickly jump in the hot tub to warm up. Or just skip the pool altogether and lounge in the soothing bubbles of your new spa. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a long day at work and you won’t have to spend as much money keeping the water warm as you would heating your entire pool.
