Home Project: What to Do Before You Swing a Hammer

Home Project: What to Do Before You Swing a Hammer
  • Opening Intro -

Doing a home renovation project has a lot of rewards.

For starters, if you opt to do it yourself, you'll find a nice amount of pride knowing you did something to greatly improve your home.

In addition to that boost of confidence, home renovation projects also allow you to make upgrades to your home, and this can help you build equity. However, while there is a lot of good that can come with a home renovation project, it does take quite a bit of planning beforehand.

Before you start swinging a hammer (or hiring someone that will) be sure to do the following things.

Know your budget

It would be nice to have a chef’s kitchen, an exquisite bathroom, and all the square footage to house you and your 500 closest friends; however, that dream home is not always in the budget.

Before you decide to start a home project, it’s important to know just how much money you have to work with. Whether this money is coming from a savings account or you’re taking out a loan, knowing your budget ahead of time will make some of your renovation decisions for you.

For instance, a smaller budget means you’ll have lower-end finishes while a larger budget will give you a chance for some higher-end finishes. However, regardless of your budget, it’s also important to know that there will be unexpected expenses, so don’t account for every single dollar of your budget just in case.

Decide how it’s getting done

Once you know how much you have to spend, you need to decide how it’s getting done. For instance, if you have a smaller project, a small budget, or you’re handy, then you’ll maybe want to consider doing the project yourself. In addition, if you have a larger project, it would be best if you let a professional handle it. Note that these options come with different costs, so be prepared with your budget. In addition, if you’re going to have a professional contractor do the job, be sure to get multiple quotes first before signing any contracts.

Have a realistic timeline

Most home renovation projects will take some time, especially if they involve plumbing or electrical changes or additions. No matter what project you have, be sure you have an accurate timeline. For instance, if you’re having your family over for Christmas dinner, then starting a kitchen renovation on December 20th is not a smart idea.

If you are using a contractor, be sure to ask them for a detailed timeline, and then talk with them daily to see how the timeline is going. Doing this will help everyone stay on task or at least be prepared for any bumps in the road.

Make necessary accommodations

Sometimes you can live through a home renovation, and sometimes you can’t. Be sure to think about the renovation at hand and determine if you need to make adjustments or accommodations because of it.

For instance, if you’re going to be remodeling the only bathroom in your house, then you may want to stay at a family member’s house or a hotel until the bathroom is finished. However, if you’re remodeling one of two bathrooms, then you can likely live through it.

In addition to this, you’ll also want to prepare. For instance, if you’re remodeling your kitchen, you will want to be sure you have a microwave or oven somewhere else in your home so you can still make meals. If you don’t, then you’ll end up blowing your budget because you’ll be spending quite a bit of it on dining out.

Think of the interior design

Once the renovation is over, you’ll want to show off your new digs with some great new style. This may often mean finding an interior designed to help you. This way, you won’t end up putting your old ratty furniture into a room that’s been recently remodeled, and you can instead get a whole new look for your new space.

Home renovation projects can be exciting, but it’s important to fully understand just what you’re taking on before you get into it.
