We all long for that perfect kitchen that has just the right amount of storage, that has a cozy eat-in nook, that sports enough counter space, and that is loaded with high end finishes, like granite and stainless steel.
You might be able to get everything you ever wanted from your kitchen renovation. But, most of us have to compromise some of what we want for one reason or another. Sometimes our kitchens just aren’t large enough to accommodate all the components we’d love to have. Sometimes the budget we’re working with doesn’t quite stretch far enough.
Regardless of your situation, there are a few changes you can make that will leave you feeling happier in your own space and may get you top dollar if you end up selling your home.
Yes, I know. Open kitchen shelving can be scary. With no cupboard doors hiding piles of mugs and mismatched glasses, your kitchen might end up looking messier than ever. Don’t worry. The opposite will happen. Really. The first thing you need to do is realize that your cupboards really aren’t as unorganized as you might think they are. Your plates and bowls are already neatly stacked. As for those mugs, do you really need enough to serve an army? Keep your favorites and donate the rest.

Open shelving draws the eye right past the stuff piled neatly on those shelves to the wall behind. That trick visually opens up the room making it feel large and airy … and you didn’t even need to knock out any walls to do it!
Buying new appliances is a great no-mess kitchen upgrade. Modern styles decked out with modern finishes come in a range of prices perfect for most budgets. Stainless steel is still popular, but it by no means the only choice you’ll have if you want to update. Black stainless steel is gaining in popularity, and good old plain white or black is as stylish as ever.
Obviously, I’m going to recommend that you replace (or at least examine!) the range hood. Give it a good cleaning to start. Then you’ll need to figure out if it’s still doing a great job at exhausting all that grease, smoke, and cooking odor. If not, here’s your chance to choose a modern and very functional replacement.

Add Color And Style
Whether or not you can embark on a total renovation where you knock out walls and reconfigure plumbing, this tip remains true. Add a spot of color. You can paint old cupboard doors or one accent wall. You can add color accents by way of colorful small appliances or chair cushions.

Along with a hit of color, I also recommend changing up all the old cabinet hardware for new, modern styles. Sometimes, you’ll find that new hardware does not fit neatly into the existing holes created by the old hardware. No matter. Get yourself some wood filler, lay on a fresh coat of paint, and install your new door pulls. You’ll love your kitchen’s new look.
