DIY Home Exterior Renovations For All

DIY Home Exterior Renovations For All
  • Opening Intro -

Lets face it- curb appeal is everything.

It's the first and last thing homeowners glance at when coming into, and leaving their home.

-------------------------------------

The exterior of the home provides the first impression to viewers and can easily contradict what neighbors, family, and friends think of your home upon first glance. Its one of the most important and powerful statements that your living environment provides your community and development.

Depending on the age of your home, exterior design and functionality can greatly differ. For instance, most homes built in the last five years are probably up-to-date on the most current trends and design styles. Architectural offerings and trendy colors may be used to increase its curb appeal. The most interesting landscaping and most functional driveway and sidewalks were probably installed to give it the most appeal.

In comparison, a home build several decades ago may lack the same appeal provided by more modern homes. For example, many homes built in the 1970’s consist of single level, brick ranch-style homes. Many of the homes may not have depth and dimension to their front rendering, making more modern homes with detailed rooflines and bay windows, and side load garages more visually inviting.

Don’t worry- If you live in a home that lacks curb appeal that your neighbors may already have, there are plenty of ways you can spruce up your exterior this spring to make your home stand out again.

Painting

Repainting your entire home may not be an option. Not only can it be costly, but it can require a lot of prep work and planning. Plus, if you select a color that you regret down the road, you are in for an expensive, time consuming project if you decide to repaint your entire home.

Check your homes exterior and see if there are areas where accent colors might make your exterior pop a little more than it already does. Would a neutral trim color, with accent colors add a new dimension to your home? Are there bay windows that could be highlighted further? Consider painting these areas to add depth, color, and a new dimension to your exterior. Many older homes may have flat fronts with little to no depth. Consider building a small covering over your homes front door to add some dimension.

Landscaping

Carefully evaluate your current landscaping. Do things look out of place? Are existing shrubs and trees overgrown? Ensuring your yard is functional, clean, and inviting are the first steps in evaluating your current setup.

Consider removing older shrubs, and replacing them with smaller, more maintainable shrubbery. When selecting plants, consider the heights at which they will grow, and ensure you are mixing heights of plants in your landscape. Avoid planting shrubs that may grow too fast or too large for your area (like some types of cypresses) to develop a uniform, clean landscape. Besides, planting new plants in your front yard can be a fun family activity that your entire family can become involved with this spring!

The Small Things

There are many other small areas that you can concentrate on to improve the overall appeal of your homes exterior. Consider building window boxes, and planting new flowers or hanging vines to add a new design element under your windows. Replace your old house numbers, by spray painting them a new color or completely replacing them with new numbers. Consider a small garden flag with a simple design for your natural areas. Finally, consider adding a few landscaping lights into your design to highlight accents on your home at night. Even if you lack the knowledge required to wire landscaping lights, solar lighting options are also available.

Spring Is Almost Here

This spring, make a statement with your homes exterior. Impress your neighbors, and invest in a few budget friendly techniques that can boost your homes value. Engage your entire family in the activities, and schedule one or two weekends where you can all work together to complete the DIY renovations. The outcome associated with this small amount of work, small budget, but a lot of sweat equity can make a large impact on your home.
