There are however a few basic considerations that need to be met in order that you do a good job of the task at hand.
Do’s
- Always come up with a budget:
A budget is necessary because it gives your unlimited imagination a focal point, beyond which things (in this case decor) will not be possible. A budget also gives all those involved in the task a fair idea of the kind of artifacts they can buy given that budget. - Take everyone’s opinion into consideration:
If you’re living in a space as a family, there’s no way that the decor of the place bears the stamp of only one resident. So even before you begin the project, take everyone’s opinions on colors, artifacts, furniture and other important decisions into consideration. Remember that the decor of your home may not be updated year on year and so it is important that the overall underline is classic. - DIY only if you can:
While DIY is a trend that is sweeping the world, where everyday folk put on their workman clothes and get busy on projects, it isn’t for everyone. Sometimes it would be best to explain your vision to a craftsman or pro and have him/her execute it for you. It may cost you a little extra, but it will also last a lot longer. - Always check a contractor’s credentials:
Contractors often come recommended to you by friends or relatives who’ve used their services and come away impressed. Before hiring a contractor though make sure you check things like his references, his license and others. Better safe than sorry. - Stick to a plan:
Before beginning an interior decor project sit with your contractor and figure out a schedule by which the project will proceed and be completed. Make room in it for unforeseeable and unavoidable delays like the weather and/or truant laborers, but by and large stick to the script for the completion of a project.

Don’ts
- Ever overshoot your budget:
Plan your budget such that you get all your major work done and dusted. Remember not to be impulsive and shop rashly. Anything that you’ve deemed unnecessary at the time can always be bought or added later. - Skimp on quality:
Don’t skimp on quality of raw materials in order to meet your budget. The basics like paint, plaster of Paris and cement can sometimes be expensive but are vital to the completion of the job, the look of the home and above all the safety of all those in there. - Micromanage:
Micromanagement can often times be the death of a successful project. Once you’ve hired a responsible contractor, let him/her take the onus of completing the job assigned him/her and take stock of the situation once or twice a week. Your constant presence at the site could seem like a bit of overkill or lack of faith in the contractor’s ability.
