So you have decided to make major changes in your home?

This is an exciting time for any home owner but do you know where to start?

If this is the first time that you have attempted a home remodeling project, you may be at a loss as to where to begin. No matter what type of project you are attempting, the basic steps to get started are all the same. Below is a simple guide on how to begin planning the stages of your home remodel.

What to do?

First, you will need to decide what type of home remodeling project you would like to complete. If you are considering a complete home remodel, you may need to break the project up into smaller projects to save money and your sanity. By going from one area to the next, you will be able to still use your home while making changes. For example, if you want to remodel your kitchen and bathroom, start with the bathroom, you home would be difficult to maneuver if you have the kitchen and bathroom unusable at the same time! Once you have determined the spot for your remodel, it is time to begin the planning stages.

What type of remodel?

For examples sake we shall consider a bathroom remodel. So you have chosen to remodel your bathroom and now need to determine what changes to make. Will this be a simple paint and décor change or will you be completing taking everything out and making significant changes? These are questions to consider. Determine what type of remodel you would like to complete and then get started building a budget.

Building a Budget

When remodeling an area of the home, it is important to have a budget in mind. For example, if you know you have $1,000 that you can dedicate towards the remodel then you must plan around this amount. If you have $10,000 that you can afford to spend then you know that you can take more liberties with the design. For this bathroom model, we shall imagine there is $5,000 to spend. This will help to decide what type of bathtub or shower option, new toilet, fixtures, etc that can be used. Keep track of your budget and every aspect you intend to change needs to be considered so that you do not go over the intended amount.

Contractor or In-house?

Once you have a budget in place and know what type of remodel you are to complete, you will need to decide if you will be doing the work or if you need to hire a contractor. Major remodels will most likely need permits to be completed so a contractor may be needed. If you are handy and are only making small changes, then go ahead and save money by doing the work yourself. However, if the job is too complicated, you will need to figure the cost of a contractor and handymen into your budget.

Purchasing Materials

Once you are ready to begin, you will need to purchase the materials. Be sure to hang on to all receipts so that if you do not use any materials or have left overs, you can return the items to receive some of your budget back. You may also find you do not like the look of certain items so you can easily return them if you have the receipts.

Get to Work

Once you have purchased the items, you will need to clear the space. Once the space is clear of furniture and cleaned, you will be ready to get started. The project can now take place and once completed, you will have a newly renovated space to enjoy!
