Six Thrifty Ways to Create an Outdoor Entertaining Paradise

Six Thrifty Ways to Create an Outdoor Entertaining Paradise
  • Opening Intro -

Now is the time for outdoor entertaining, but to make an outdoor party pleasantly memorable takes a bit of planning and forethought.

-------------------------------------

Here are six ways to create an outdoor entertaining paradise for not much money:

1. Put Candles Under Glass

Candles in votive glasses or hurricane lamps are not only protected from the wind, but create an extraordinarily romantic mood. Few things are more beautiful than the light of candles strengthening as the sun goes down during an outdoor get-together.

2. Make Sure There Are Enough Chairs

It’s amazing how often this is overlooked and how often guests are reduced to playing musical chairs. Make sure the chairs are generous and comfortable and not rickety, especially if the ground they’re standing on is a little uneven. By the way, swings that hang from the sturdy limbs of old trees can also serve as comfortable seating.

3. Bring the Food to the Patio Instead of the Yard

Hot food can cool down even in the time it takes to walk from the kitchen to the yard. So it’s best to simply have everyone be served as close to the kitchen or the barbecue grill as possible. If the meal is cold like green salads, there’s more flexibility as to where on the property it can be eaten.

4. Invest In a Serving Cart and Large Trays

A serving cart will help the hostess move around food and table settings with ease. If a homeowner designed his or her home with outdoor entertaining in mind, he or she might have called on a door company to make the kitchen door extra wide to accommodate a serving cart. A serving cart can also double as a buffet table.

Also, large trays can also move lots of items in a short amount of time. They should have galleries so dishes don’t slide off of them and sturdy handles. A big wicker basket also makes it easy to carry dinnerware and napkins and is itself esthetically pleasing.

5. Make Sure To Have the Right Equipment

Sometimes the difference between a ho-hum outdoor party and a real blow out is the equipment. Barbecue mavens might take advantage of a roaring fire pit on the patio, but if the party is going to happen all around the backyard, a portable grill might be in order. Other items to take into account are interesting outdoor lighting, music, protection from smoke and wind and insect control. The hostess should also plan to bring the party indoors if the weather and the insects become overwhelming.

6. Make It Glamorous

Instead of the usual food guests expect at outdoor parties like mac and cheese and fried chicken, try meals that the guests haven’t thought of like vichyssoise. Instead of plain paper plates, buy sturdier melamine plates of different, vibrant colors. If the hostess is intrepid, she might choose to serve from real china, with real silverware. The drinks can also be served not from paper cups but from crystal or at least glassware. Fresh flowers, either from the garden or the florists, are also a must especially if they’re arranged with the votive candles.

These are only six of many ideas that can make outdoor entertaining a true pleasure.
