Thinking Ahead: What Your New Home Needs Before the Moving Van Arrives
  • Opening Intro -

When you begin the moving process, you have a laundry list of things to do since there are many things your new home needs before you arrive in the moving van.

You have the opportunity to set up your new home correctly before the family settles in, and each item on this list must be taken care of to make moving a smooth process.

Checklist Item #1: Flooring

The flooring in your new house must be repaired before you move in. Any designs you have on changing the flooring must be taken care of before you actually back up the moving truck. Even if you sand the floors and throw down some rugs, you must do so before you start the move. New carpet and staining hardwood floors can take a long time and is much better when done before you get the furniture there.

Checklist Item #2: Prepare For Appliances

If you are bringing your own refrigerator and freezer, you must make sure the old refrigerator and freezer are gone. Any other appliances you want to bring along must have space. You don’t want to try and find room for your appliances, or discover they don’t fit while the movers are unloading the truck.

Checklist Item #3: Paint

Every room you want to paint must be done before you move into the house. It is too difficult to paint the house once you have moved in all your things, even just the boxes can make it slow going. Go in and paint a few days before you move, make sure the walls are sanded and any damages to them are fixed.

Checklist Item #4: Lawn Equipment

You must have a plan for dealing with the lawn and yard before you move. The lawn at your new home has its own issues, and you should plan to handle them before you get the boxes in the van. Waiting to cut the grass, or deal with the garden will cause overgrowth that is hard to handle once it gets out of control. Take a quick look over the yard of the property and make sure you have the proper tools you’ll need later for landscaping. If you have to put your own sprinklers in, you might want to wait until you are settled to get started.

Checklist Item #5: Power, Gas, Water and Internet

The utilities in your new house must be set up before you walk through the door. Turning the power, water, gas, cable, and Internet connection on before you move allows you to immediately set up the house. The utilities also allow you power and water to complete the move if it lasts into the night. Call your electric company and if you can’t drink the tap water have a company come to do water treatment so you have plenty to drink while doing all the heavy lifting. Make sure it is all working properly and that you have everything ready.

All the items on the list above will help you prepare your home for the big move. If you wait to complete the items on this list, it could make unpacking that much more difficult. Planning ahead makes the moving process easier for you and your family.
