White sales are not just sheets and towels, but include all home decor. Here’s what to keep in mind as you plan your shopping excursion.
Towels and Thickness
Those $2.99 bath towels may be a real bargain. Trouble is, they’re much too thin to do the job and won’t hold up in the wash.
Thickness should not be your only criteria when buying towels. Absorbency is very important and cotton has long reigned here. But cotton is not the only king — new fibers, including Modal, are both lightweight and highly absorbent. It feels stiff at first, but they get softer as you wash them. Check labels carefully and follow the washing instructions.
Consider buying extra towels and swapping out these to extend the life of all towels. Even with regular wash, your towels can still be good after many years. Your design tastes may change before your towels wear out, but at least you’ll make full use of them before replacing.
Consider Your Sheets
Sheets are another area where traditional criteria such as thread count have been turned on its head. Thread count measures the number of strands of threads per inch with finer threads meaning softer fabrics.
Don’t rely on thread count to determine sheet quality. The quality of the cotton matters too with Egyptian cotton the highest quality and the most expensive too. If you’re budget minded and the white sale prices are still too high, consider pima or supima sheets, with both offering top quality too.
About Heated Blankets
There is plenty of cold weather left when heated blankets go on sale in Jan. White sales usually offer the best prices of the year, often at clearance equivalent prices.
You and your spouse may have differences of opinion on heating settings and that is why dual-control electric blankets are a favorite for many shoppers. Choose a blanket with ultra thin wiring to avoid that odd wiry feeling that some blankets have. Most blankets have five up to 10 heat settings with some also including a pre-heat setting to warm up your blanket before you get into bed.
Pillows, Throws, Placemats, Oh My!
Many retailers have extended the concept of white sales include most home decor. You can find throws, pillows, place mats, kitchen items, living room decor and bath goods on sale too. Just be mindful that some of the “non” white sale items may not be quite the buy in Jan. as they are at other times of the year. If it says “clearance” it likely is the lowest price that you’ll see for that item.
If you miss your Jan. white sale, some retailers repeat the sale in the summer. You won’t see many heated blankets, but you may find good deals on summer decor including place mats, curtains, and area rugs.
