How to Avoid Summer Home Improvement Scams

Be watchful or get ripped off!

By John Smith

During the warm summer months, many homeowners will take the time to work on various home improvement projects. This is a perfect time to do necessary maintenance and work on the house. Because of this, there are also an increased amount of construction related scams that occur. There are a few things to look out for to ensure that this does not happen.

Door to Door

Reputable construction companies will normally not go door to door in an effort to solicit business. Anybody that comes to the door offering such services should be highly scrutinized. Many times, these people will offer extremely low rates on their work.

Another thing to be wary of would be the person who states that there are leftover building supplies from a nearby job. This scam tries to give the person a sense of credibility. With this scenario, the scammer may state that he just finished up a job close by and has supplies that he needs to unload. He will usually offer some extremely low quote as well.

Shoddy Work

Once the homeowner agrees, the scammer will usually look to get money up front. A common practice would be that the person states that he needs the money from the homeowner so he can get necessary supplies. Then, the person will either do cheap and shoddy work or he will never be heard from again, having not completed the job as promised.

When having work done by a contractor, it is a common practice to get references from them. The company or person should be able to offer several references that include current or previous customers. If the person is unwilling or unable to provide to these, there may be a problem and he may be trying to hide something.

Multiple Quotes

It is also not uncommon to get a number of quotes for a job; at least three quotes is recommended. This will give the homeowner the chance to meet with the contractors and see who will be the best fit. If there is one contractor that is extremely lower than the others, you should be cautious. He could be providing quick and shoddy work. Most quotes should be in the same general price range and most contractors will provide a homeowner with a free quote. These are usually relatively easy to set up. Most companies are happy to get work, so they are relatively willing to provide this service.

There are many reputable companies and trustworthy individuals out there, but there are also a lot of people who will take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners. With a small amount of caution, home improvement projects can be accomplished with the help of a respected and professional contractor.
