• This is the place where the story of Santa Claus all started. In Myra, Turkey, an ancient Roman seaport town that is noted for its rock-cut tombs and other Roman sites. It was here when the Apostle Paul changed ships on his transport to Rome for trial.
• Myra is also the place where you will find an excavated church built in the 6th century over the ruins of the original church where Saint Nicholas was bishop during the 3rd and 4th century. At the time, the church was a Roman Catholic monastery that serviced the Christian community that was a major part of Saint Paul’s missionary travels during the first century.
• Currently Myra is a tourism site where you can view the cut-rock tombs, Saint Nicholas church and other Roman excavations.

Saint Nicholas of Myra

Notes:

• Saint Nicholas traditionally lived from March 15 270 – December 6 343AD. He was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Myra in Asia Minor during the time of the Roman Empire.
• Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, prostitutes, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe. His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus (“Saint Nick”).

• Tradition holds that Saint Nicholas was born into a wealthy Greek family. Upon the death of his parents, he distributed his inherited wealth to the poor. One particular story is about prominent family who lost everything. They had three girls were about to be sold into slavery because the family couldn’t afford a dowry.
• Nicholas hearing of the matter came during night and threw gold coins through the window for a dowry. It was used to marry off the first daughter. Nicholas returned again and threw a second bag of coins through the window for the second daughter. Upon the third return, the man of the family waited and caught Saint Nicholas throwing in the third bag. The man knelt in humble gratitude for his charity and all Nicholas wanted in return is for the man to keep his identity secret.
• Whether this story is true of not, it has become the genesis of the Santa Claus who distributes gifts during the night when the children are asleep.

The coming of St. Nick

Notes:

• The Santa Claus we are familiar with today was brought to America by European immigrants. The Dutch are credited with transporting the legend of Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) to New Amsterdam (now New York City), along with the custom of giving gifts and sweets to children on his feast day, December 6 (also the day of his death).

• Legend has it that on St. Nicholas eve, Dec 5, children places their shoes outside in hope to find gifts and sweets the next morning. This tradition was magnified in the US that was merged into the gift giving celebration around Christmas when the early Church celebrated the Christ birth on December 25 to replace the pagan winter solstice observance.
