Evolution of the light bulb
Notes:
- For many years, lighting for the home and other uses was produced by an oil lamp. The sources of fuel included a wide variety of plants such as nuts, seeds, and animal fats (butter, fish oil, shark liver, whale blubber, seals). The oil lamp was eventually replaced in the 1850s by the kerosene lamp – using fuel derived from petroleum products. This source of lighting has been used for thousands of years.
- By the 19th century, different inventors from across the globe began researching lighting sources from electricity – from this research came the incandescent light bulb that was perfected and patented by Thomas Edison in the late 1800’s. The incandescent light bulb (improved over time) become the lighting choice for the past 100 years.
- But incandescent bulbs take a lot of electricity to operate. Given the energy shortages during WWII and the oil crisis of the mid-1970s, the fluorescent tube and compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) became a popular lighting source to reduce energy use.
- And now today, the fastest developing lighting technologies is the light-emitting diode (or LED). LEDs use a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. The advantage of LEDs is the low energy-use – approximately 75% less energy consumption than incandescent lighting. And LEDs are being produced in all shapes and sizes that give us the incandescent styles that we love.

The light bulb of choice
Notes:
- The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient lighting technologies. Quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting.
- But more importantly, LED bulbs are approximately 75% more energy efficient than incandescent lighting.
- But what about the styles and size? Earlier LEDs bulbs were limited – nothing like the decorative incandescent bulbs that we use for our chandeliers, bath vanity, and other lighting sources that added decor to kitchen, bath and living areas.
- But no more! Advances in LEDs now come in styles and sizes that look and work exactly as our incandescent ancestors. You will be surprised by the varying types of LED bulbs that look exactly like our regular lighting.
