How to Choose the Right Landscaping Design for Your Property

Enjoy the following pic ideas. Don't forget to leave us a quick comment below.

And please share this post within your social networks.

  • You are surfing the web and you see amazing photos of residential landscaping. You find yourself pining for expansive decks, a water feature, a great fire pit, a nice little gazebo. I mean, you can really see yourself relaxing in your backyard, enjoying the tranquility of the space.

The only problem with designing your landscape from those awesome pictures is that those landscapes were designed for the property they sit on. Your property is probably different, maybe quite different.

If you want to have an incredible yard that you love to spend time in, it is best to custom design it for your own space and your own needs.

How do you want to use the yard?

Notes:

  • Deciding Needs:

Do you have children? Pets? That means you may need more grass area for play. Do you want a huge vegetable garden? That means you need to clear a section of the landscape that will get plenty of sunshine. These are important questions to ask and answer before you start drawing up a plan.

  • If you have pets, you may need to add a fence to enclose the space and keep them safe. If you have children, you may want to have a large open space for play or a playset in the yard for them to enjoy.
  • Make and Prioritize Your List:

Make a list of all of the uses that you see for the yard. This is the brainstorming phase, so write down every desired use that comes to mind. Now is the time to write it down if you want your own fire pit, deck, space to grill, garden, etc.

  • Don’t forget to consider both the front and the back of the house. You will want to create a landscape design for the front yard as well as a landscape design for the backyard.
  • Now that you have brainstormed, do a little prioritizing. Are there desires that really are must-haves? Make sure those have a high priority. Are there other things that might be nice but are not vital to the landscape design? Give those a lower priority.
  • Do this work before you start drawing a plan so you know what to consider eliminating if you can’t have it all.
  • Brainstorming Ideas:

What should you brainstorm to help flush out and prioritize ideas? Let’s begin with this simple download of garden planning specs. It lists the items to consider that will help formulate the landscaping plan.

What is already part of the landscape?

Notes:

  • Survey Your Current Landscape:

Consider all of the elements of the existing landscape. Are there parts of the landscape design that you really like? Are there parts that you really dislike? Are there elements that can be fixed or transformed into a welcome part of the landscape?

  • What does the land look like? Are there hills and valleys? Is the yard sloped significantly? Look back at your list of uses for the yard and decide if you will need to change the topography of the yard.
  • If the yard is badly sloped and you want a flat space, you may need to build a retaining wall. This is the stage at which you should identify those needs.
  • Planning For the Future:

One other consideration as you survey your landscape is making your landscape smart. It will add value to the landscape and make your home easier to sell to the younger generation:

    • Making It Smart:

You’ve heard of smart homes; and how a smart home can help save money, make life easier, and add security to your home. But what about smart gardens?

    • What could you do to make your landscaping smart for easier maintenance and beauty. Let’s explore some ideas that can convert your garden landscape into something smart.

How much maintenance do you want to do?

Notes:

  • Do You Like Gardening Work:

Are you someone who just loves to mow the lawn? If so, having a significant amount of grass that will need to be mowed probably isn’t a problem. On the other hand, if you don’t have the time, ability, or inclination to mow, it’s not a good idea to have a large amount of grass.

  • Do you want to water plants by hand or would you prefer to have an automated irrigation system? Alternatively, you could create an extremely low-maintenance yard by choosing native, drought-tolerant plants.
  • It’s likely that you will choose a combination of low and higher maintenance regions in the yard. For instance, you could put a large area of grass in the backyard even though that would need regular mowing, but use the front yard for more hardscape and native plants.
  • What Kind of Maintenance:

Maintaining your landscape requires more work than just mowing. You need to keep the trees and shrubs trimmed, plants watered and fertilized, leaves raked, and much more. And if you have a vegetable garden, you need to keep critters and insects out. So let’s review some key gardening maintenance tools that you might need:

    • Mowing:

Mowing is by far the largest outdoor maintenance task that will be required – it has to be done weekly through the growing season. You can outsource the mowing to contractors or neighborhood kid. Or you can mow it yourself using the latest mowing equipment.

    • If you plan to have a large, grassy area, you might consider a riding mower. If not so large, a self-propelled mower can do. Look into the electric self-propelled mowers. They are just as powerful as gas-powered, but are much quieter and cleaner.
    • Trimming and Edging:

If you take pride in your landscaping, then trimming and edging will be required to keep the lawn looking nice around trees, garden beds, and concrete boundaries.

    • The purpose of edging is to give your lawn a nice, edged boundary between the lawn and other landscape structures. You will trimming to cut grass and vegetation growth in hard-to-reach mowing areas.
    • Scrub and Tree Trimmers:

These tools include clippers, snippers, hedgers, pruners and saws – the tools you will need to keep shrubs and trees trimmed, pruned, and looking nice. They are also used to cut back trees and shrubs that have overgrown their intended area.

    • Tree and shrub pruning are generally done 1-2 times a year to keep them in shape.
    • Planters and Hoes:

Planters include spools, bulb inserter, hoes and other tools for planting flowers and other vegetation. If you plan to have a vegetable garden, tillers and hoes may needed to plow and furrow your planting area.

    • Rakes and Shovels:

If your landscape has trees, you will need rakes to gather up the leaves that drop each fall. If you plan to plant trees and other large vegetation, you will need shovels (and perhaps picks) to dig the hole for planting.

    • Other gardening equipment to maintain your landscape include leaf blowers, spreaders, fertilizer dispensers, chain saws, and more. A complete list can be found here:
    • view post: 53 Different Types of Gardening Tools (Mega List)
  • And What About Watering:

Depending on how you arrange your landscape, it might require watering in order for the trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables grow and prosper. So another important landscape tool is water delivery systems:

    • Irrigation Systems:

It’s hot outside! And no forecast for rain soon. So to keep you garden growing – and more importantly your trees and shrubs – out comes the yard irrigation system.

Draw up a plan

Notes:

  • From Ideas to An Actual Plan:

You have considered what to keep in your current landscape design. You know what your most important uses for outdoor spaces are. You have decided how much maintenance you want to do. Now it is time to make your plan!

  • You can hire a professional landscape planner or architect if you choose. Your other option is to DIY the planning of the landscape. If you do choose to do it yourself, write out your plan in as much detail as you can. It will be easier to install the landscape elements if you are working from a detailed plan.
  • Use Modeling:

To start your planning, draw a scale model of your entire yard, front and back. Put everything that you are keeping from your existing landscape on the model. Then begin to strategically locate your must-have elements. Think about function as you locate an outdoor seating space or cooking space. Make sure there are natural or human-made pathways to move through the various spaces.

  • For the parts of your design that involve different types of trees, you will need to carefully consider where to place them. For trees as well as larger bushes and shrubs, make sure you know how tall and wide they will grow. What looks sparse when you plant it will fill out over time; you don’t want the landscape to look crowded and overgrown in a year or two.
  • Putting Your Plan In Action:

You can find landscape software for both computer and mobile devices that will let you design your landscaping with all of the elements found in professional designs. Use that plan to collect contractor bids on what actually needs to be done:

    • CAD Designs:

Is your garden landscape worn out and tired? Perhaps you have the same look after 20+ years. Maybe it’s time for a new landscape design. Something that would energize your outdoor enjoyment.

    • Let’s first start with a little planning by using landscape CAD concepts and designs.
    • view post: Coming Up With A New Garden Landscape Plan
    • Don’t Forget to Add Trees:

While it is common to plant flowers and shrubs in your garden, have you ever thought about planting a tree? Many people think of a tree as something that stretches into the sky and takes over a garden, but that is not the case.

    • There are many types of trees available, and some can grow to humongous sizes, but there are some that can transform the look of your garden while still remaining small and compact. So, how can tree planting help your garden to thrive?

Set a budget

Notes:

  • How Much Can You Afford:

Now that you have your plan, it’s time to make a realistic budget for creating the landscape design of your dreams. Price out each element, giving yourself a couple of different price-point options. For instance, if you want a deck in the backyard, price out different options from treated lumber to composite decking products.

  • If a covered patio is part of your landscape design, there are several budget considerations you will need to take into account. You may need permits and you may need to hire a contractor to install the covering, increasing the costs beyond just the materials:
    • About Budgeting:

There are many different reasons to remodel your home or redo your landscaping. You love your abode, but maybe you want to increase the enjoyment you get out of one element of it. Maybe you like the personal rewards of this kind of work. Or maybe you’re looking to increase the value of your home for an eventual sale.

    • Most likely, a mix of these three reasons or more is at play. However, if you’re going down the road of fixing up your home, you’ll need to overcome a few different challenges.
    • Creating the perfect home remodeling budget will be one of them.
    • view post: 4 Tips on Starting a Home Remodeling Budget for Beginners
  • FINAL REMARKS

Now that you have your plan and your budget you are ready to install your landscape. If you have planned well, taking your unique needs into consideration, your landscape will give you years of enjoyment.

  • No more looking at other pictures of landscapes and wanting what you see – you will have everything you want right at home.
