How often should you clean your oven?
Notes:
- The best practice with in-oven dirt is to wipe up drips and spills as soon as they happen since the mess inside can be magnets for germs. But who has the time to do that?
- Generally, the inside of your oven should be cleaned every three months or sooner if you notice smoke or a nasty smell.
- For your burners and hobs, it’s recommended you clean these after each use to prevent bacteria build-up and clean the knobs and handles every week as they can be home to more germs than a toilet seat!
- How to clean your oven:
-
1. Start By Vacuuming:
Vacuuming the oven? Yes, stay with us, because one of the easiest ways to remove large chunks of charred food is to get the vacuum out.
- When the oven is off, unplugged and completely cold, remove all the trays and use the vacuum crevice nozzle to suck out any chunks of food.

2. Remove More Stubborn Mess Manually:
It’s unlikely you’ll be able to remove everything from the oven with vacuuming as there’s likely burnt-on food, grease and more. So once you’ve got out all you can, put on a sturdy pair of rubber gloves and get to work.
- Move your fingers (carefully) around the nooks and crannies and possible places that food might have gotten stuck down.
- You can also use tools to scrape the burnt-on mess, like a soft cleaning brush or a wooden spatula. As long as it won’t scratch the inside of the oven, you’re good to go.
-
3. Gathering Your Cleaning Products:
The items you’ll need will depend on how long since you last cleaned, and which methods you’re using, but here are some standard cleaning things to collect:
-
- A soft cloth or sponge
- Bicarbonate of soda
- Vinegar
- Spray bottle
- Kitchen roll or towels
- Rubber gloves
- Stiff brush or old toothbrush
- Spatula (wooden or plastic)
- Top Tip:
Oven cleaning can be a messy job, so protect your floor with something like an old tea towel. And use a face mask if there are chemicals involved. -

4. Loosen Stubborn Dirt With Steam:
To reduce spent scrubbing and cleaning, you could soften and loosen stubborn dirt with steam.
-
- Heat your oven to 230 °C (446°F) and then fill a wide, shallow oven or heat-proof bowl with an equal mix of water and vinegar.
- Let it ‘cook’ for anywhere from 30 minutes to a maximum of one hour to get things moving.
- Wait until the oven has completely cooled down, then use a sponge or spatula to remove the loosened grime.
-
5. Bicarbonate of Soda & Vinegar:
Now the worst is off, it’s time to clean up the remnants. Start by creating a thick paste with water and bicarbonate of soda.
- Whilst wearing gloves and ensuring the oven is cold and turned off, use a cloth or sponge to rub the paste thoroughly throughout the inside of the oven but avoid any exposed heat fixtures.
- Leave the paste on for a minimum of two hours or overnight for maximum cleaning powers. Then create a foaming action by spraying an equal mix of vinegar and water all over the paste.
- This fizzing will lift the dirt away from the oven. Once the fizzing has stopped, you can wipe the inside of the oven clean with kitchen paper or a rag or cloth.

6. How to Clean the Glass Door:
Oven doors are one of the worst culprits for attracting stubborn grease. With the steps above completed, you may have already found that a lot of the grime has come away from the door, but there are a couple of extra steps you can take to ensure the glass is sparkling clean.
- You can repeat the bicarbonate of soda method on the glass and wipe clean with a rag or use a simple solution of washing up liquid and warm water applied with a sponge to help remove grease.
- Just make sure you don’t use anything abrasive as it may scratch the glass.

7. How to Clean the Racks and Trays:
The racks and trays can be tricky to clean due to their size and shape, so the bathtub is usually the easiest place to clean them. Once in position, mix one-part vinegar with one-part water in a spray bottle and generously cover the racks and trays.
- Once the solution has had enough time to loosen dirt and grease (you should see it starting to drip), use a stiff brush or old toothbrush to remove the dirt and rinse them clean under the tap.
- You can repeat this process a few times if there are some stubborn parts, or you can put the racks in sealed bin bags with the solution for a few hours to completely smother them in vinegar-cleaning power
-
8. Try Specialist Oven Cleaner:
This step depends on your cleaning preferences, but it is OK to reach for a specialist oven cleaner to help you remove seriously stubborn dirt.
- There are lots of products on the market, such as:
-
- Scouring paste
- Full oven cleaning kits
- Non-acidic cookware cleaner
- Heavy-duty liquid cleaner
- Spray foam
- All-purpose de-greasers
- Most of these can be found at your local supermarket or specialist cleaning shop. These chemical solutions are usually more caustic, so make sure the room is ventilated and use rubber gloves and a face mask for safety.
- One final optional step is to wipe everything down with some classic antibacterial spray once you’re done for a nice streak-free shine.

Side Note: How to Prevent Dirt From Building Up In Your Oven:
One of the easiest ways to keep your oven in tip-top shape is to prevent dirt from building up in the first place. Why not cook chicken or fish in roasting bags? They help lock in flavor and moisture and stop fat from spitting all over the inside of the oven.
- You can also purchase non-stick oven mats that sit in the base of the oven to catch any spills and are easy to clean.
