engineered hardwood flooring maintenance
DO’s
Notes:
- Engineered hardwood floors are sure to survive for a longer period if some of the following tips are kept in mind:
-
Coverings and Mats:
This is the easiest way to keep your hardwood floors clean and away from any wear and tear. You should always cover the busiest parts of the floor with a mat or carpet.
Like the living room or the kitchen floor, these places are usually the busiest in the house, so to avoid damage to the shine or the texture of the wood, you should keep it covered.
-
Recognized Products:
You should always use products that are recommended for hardwood floors. Use cleaners and shiners from recognized companies.
Hardwood floors are expensive to renew, so it’s better to use products that are hardwood friendly.
-
Avoid Sunlight:
Nothing destroys a hardwood floor like exposure to sunlight. Sunlight will make it dry and the floor would lose texture and shine. Install your hardwood floors in cool and shaded places to increase their overall life.
Putting up curtains or blinds so they don’t get direct sunlight also does the trick.
-
Clean Often:
This is the best way to increase the life of your floor. Keep it clean and dry as much as you can. Use a soft cloth or a vacuum with proper attachments to keep it clean.
Remember only to use products recommended by professionals as anything else will destroy your hardwood floor.

DON’Ts
Notes:
- You must avoid the following to increase the life of an engineered hardwood floor:
-
Clean with Water:
Never clean a hardwood floor with water. Hot or cold, it doesn’t matter; both will destroy the floor nevertheless. Similarly, if you spill water, dry it immediately; otherwise, the wood will soak it up and be deformed.
-
Wrong Cleaning Materials:
You can clean the floor with a vacuum but only when it has the right attachments; otherwise, there would be scratch marks. Additionally, don’t use common oils to polish it; there are specialized oils in the market for this purpose.
Ammonia and vinegar might be the best cleaning solutions for other things in your house, but they are hardwood’s worst enemy. Avoid using them at all costs.
-
Walk with Shoes:
Shoes can make scratches on the floor, especially the ones with heels. If possible, always use soft slippers or wear socks when walking on them. This will maintain its shine and texture.
-
-
FINAL REMARKS
Hardwood floors are expensive, but taking care of them is not. It only needs a bit of effort and a little know-how to maintain them.
