Tips for Choosing the Best Movers

Tips for Choosing the Best Movers
  • Opening Intro -

Before you hire any moving company, make sure that you are satisfied with the answers to some important questions.

The obvious questions include how long they have been in business, whether they are licensed and insured, and whether they are willing and able to provide you with references.

With so many details to sort out, and so many opportunities for things to go wrong, there is no question that moving – whether across the country or across town – can be a very stressful experience.  Between concerns about budget and worries about damage to your prized heirlooms, perhaps the most stressful part of the process is figuring out how to get all of your possessions packed and moved from your old home to your new one.  This is where a professional team like Charlotte Movers can make all the difference by providing the necessary equipment and manpower to safely move your belonging.

Before you hire any moving company, make sure that you are satisfied with the answers to some important questions.  The obvious questions include how long they have been in business, whether they are licensed and insured, and whether they are willing and able to provide you with references.  Other questions include some of the following:

How far in advance should you book your move?

If you already know the date of your move, you are set; however, if your timing is up in the air, especially if it is possible that you will be moving at a time which is traditionally busy for moves, your first order of business is to find out how much advance notice you will need to book your move.

What is included in the rates?

Be very sure that you fully understand what is included in their quote.  If you are hiring a team to pack and move your items, are there additional fees for things like packing supplies, or for packing particular kinds of items (for example, for wrapping your crystal ware in bubble wrap?). Does the quoted rate include the possibility that windows or doors may need to be removed in order to accommodate larger pieces of furniture?  Does it take account of the fact that stairs might be involved?  Are their special charges for particular items like pianos?  It is entirely reasonable that there might be extra fees for things like this – but make sure you know this in advance.

What sort of preparation will be done in advance?

Will the company send a person in advance to evaluate your particular needs in order to prepare an accurate estimate of costs?  Will they measure doorframes, elevators, and other physical features to make sure that they are prepared for your move?  If this is not part of their normal practice, will they do it upon request? Will the packing be done on the same day, or will they arrange for packing to be done in advance?  What sort of preparation do you need do?  Should the contents of drawers be packed by you in advance or will the furniture be moved as is?

How will your furniture be protected?

Be sure that you understand the standard practices used by the company to ensure that your possessions are protected from damage during the move.  This can include the techniques and materials that are used during the packing process, and the use of blankets and other coverings to protect furniture.  It also includes understanding how many people will be on the moving crew to ensure that your items are moved safely and easily – especially if awkward pieces need to be carefully maneuvered around corners.

These are just some of the questions that you should ask a company before you sign on the dotted line.  Above all, remember that professional and experienced movers will have no hesitation providing answers to any questions you might have.
