Making Your Home Extra Cozy- It’s Not Just for Winter!

Making Your Home Extra Cozy- It’s Not Just for Winter!
  • Opening Intro -

There’s something about the word “cozy” that can make us suspicious when it comes to buying or renovating a home, since cozy seems to be one of those words that realtors use as a way of saying “Even Danny DeVito would hit his head on the ceiling in this room.

But cozy can also be a way of describing a room that has warmth, both literally and figuratively, or a room that you’ve made extra comfortable. It’s not so difficult to tailor a room to your individual tastes- to make it cozy in a way that can be enjoyed all year round. Let’s look at a few simple tricks and tips.

Add Some Color

If you’ve ever repainted your home, chances are that you went with white, or at least some variety of white. When you wander down the paint aisle at your local hardware store, you can be overwhelmed by the sheer number of “white” paints on offer, and yet you can easily personalize your room by adding a feature wall- something in a vibrant red or blue. For a changeable wall, perhaps you could paint one wall of a room with chalkboard paint, and then create art of your own. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you even put some vibrant color on the outside of your home.

Let There Be Light

Some years ago, fluorescent lighting was all the rage, whether at home or at work, and you’ll still find them in some rooms, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. You might be cooking a loving meal for your family, and yet under that harsh light, you can feel like you’re waiting in some downmarket accountants office. LED light bulbs give a warmer light while still using far less electricity, just like fluorescent lights, and they also last for years without needing to be changed.

Unique Furniture

You might not feel like spending your weekends trawling flea markets and antique stores for some cool retro furniture, and yet it can be difficult to find something truly unique when most of our furniture comes from chain stores. The Internet can be your best friend in this situation, and so be sure to check eBay and even Craigslist for someone who might be cheaply disposing of an old armchair that’s just the thing for completing the look you want for your living room.

Changing Rooms

Depending on the number of bedrooms in your house and apartment, and whether they’re roughly the same size, a great and really easy (apart from the lifting) way to reinvigorate your bedroom is to change to another one. Consider swapping bedrooms with family members or roommates, since even your old bedroom furniture will seem to be fresh when seen in a fresh context. This is not something to be attempted too often, since it can be kind of annoying to shift your bed from room to room each week.

Keep it Green

While your household appliances don’t emit as much greenhouse gas as a car, it still happens, and the air inside your home isn’t necessarily as clean as you think it is. Large green leafy plants keep the air inside your home clean, as well as giving a room that cool indoor jungle feeling. There are varieties of indoor plant to suit every taste, from the big bushy trees that dominate a room, to tiny discreet patches of moss- they all liven up a room as well as keeping it green, and clean.
