A lot of people become fixated on the need to redecorate huge parts of their home to make the maximum impact not only on rooms, but on their own perceptions of them. Sadly, this can be an expensive and ultimately fruitless thing to do, as you may not get the personality that you want from your chosen project.
As such, it’s important to focus on smaller details in the home. If you allow yourself to get too bogged down in the larger projects, you overlook the tiniest things that complete a look – and reflect your personality. As such, here are a few things that you may want to add to your home that can add a bit of charm, or simply put your designs in a totally new direction.
Consider the often unseen furnishings
Certain things are seen every day, but completely overlooked. For example, door handles are used every day, yet often considered to be an after-thought as part of a greater project. Instead of getting standard ones, why not get entirely new ones? And while we’re on the subject of doors…
Change the door mechanisms
This sounds like a weird one, but changing the mechanism of a door may truly make a difference in a room – and it’s pretty easy, too. While it may not be suitable to, say, change a bedroom door into a sliding one, there’s plenty of reasons to do it between dining and living rooms, or to open out onto the patio. Just changing the hinges to a different side might have a huge impact.
Change up wall space with shelving
By fitting shelving in clever ways, you can not only remove clutter in clever ways, but you can also display the things that you’ve collected over the years that truly mean something to you – and reflect your personality. Shelving is becoming remarkably clever in its design, too; it’s no longer just a series of flat boards hung up on a wall.
Accent walls and their variability
Finally, and while it’s not as difficult to pull off as more intense DIY tasks, is the concept of the accent wall. By painting all walls but one a basic shade, then putting a much more intense colour on another, you can inject life and personality into a room. It can be accessorised with soft furnishings, candles or even chairs and tables to get the maximum effect, but the best thing is that it can be painted over with another colour for another season. Consider this before going too all-out with complementary purchases!
