Furniture is heavy and difficult to move – especially if you don’t have a truck. When you have the new stuff delivered, you don’t want to leave the old stuff cluttering up the garage.
After all, you might want to stick a car or two in there when the weather gets lousy. Don’t let that old furniture sit around, but don’t let it go to waste either.
1. Sell It
If your furniture is in good condition or is relatively new, you can always sell it. A lot of people, especially first-time homeowners, prefer to purchase gently used furniture. It’s substantially less expensive than new furniture, unless it’s a true antique piece. If you do have antique furniture, you might be able to fetch a fortune from a collector with deep pockets.
2. Donate it
If your furniture is a bit beat up or out of style, you can always donate it. People who can’t afford furniture, especially needy families overcoming bad situations, will appreciate a couch no matter how old it is.
You might even be able to write off furniture donations as a deduction on your taxes. Everyone wins when you’re charitable.
3. Recycle It
Metal, wood, and plastic furniture can be recycled. Metal furniture, such as bed frames and shelving, can be repurposed at a scrap metal processing company. Plastic chairs and shelves might be recyclable – contact your local plant to find out for sure.
Even wood furniture can be recycled as mulch or firewood, depending on the kind of wood and the treatments used on the wood in creating the furniture.
4. Have it Hauled Away
If your furniture is truly broken or made of materials that aren’t recyclable, you might need to call a rubbish hauling company to take it away. You can haul it to the dump yourself, but if you need to rent a truck and make a long trip, it may be more efficient with both time and money to hire a professional to haul it away on your behalf.
5. Turn It Into Something Else
Broken chairs and be recycled into beautiful benches. Bathtubs can be converted into couches. It’s amazing what you can do with a few old, beat up pieces of furniture and a little imagination. If you’re handy enough and enjoy do it yourself projects, you can create new things from old furniture. If you’re proud of your creations, you might even be able to sell them.
6. Convert it into Pet Furniture
If you don’t let your dogs or cats on the people furniture, you can make them their own furniture out of your old furniture. Old couch and chair cushions can be converted into pet beds. Wooden furniture can be taken apart and reassembled into cat scratching and climbing trees, doghouses, or pet toy boxes. Your furry friends will finally have the opportunity to enjoy the furniture they were forbidden from napping on.

7. Make it a Part of Your Renovations
Old desks and dressers can be turned into bathroom vanities or kitchen islands. It’s so much cheaper than purchasing new ones and having them installed. The tops of desks and dressers, as well as their drawers, can also be turned into large shelves, which are very handy for creating storage solutions in areas like garages and work sheds.
Waste not, want not. If your furniture can get a second life, even if it’s through reincarnation, let it live again. Someday, your new furniture might find itself meeting a similar fate.
