Updated Decor: 3 Reasons Your Renovation Plans Should Include Furniture
  • Opening Intro -

Renovating is an excellent way to refresh a room or home that is started to show its age.

-------------------------------------

After all, paint starts to fade. Wallpaper starts to peel. Flooring, or at least the finish, starts to wear. Something many people overlook in their renovation plans is furniture. There are several good reasons why furniture should factor into your plans.

Style

Furniture that seemed fine before the renovation often looks out of place after the renovation. Fresh paint or flooring serves as a sharp contrast to the basic wear and tear that accumulates on furniture. Many people discover their couches, tables or cabinets seem dingy or battered. Replacing furniture at the same time as the renovation gives the whole space a crisp freshness. The only exception to this rule is if you decorate with antiques. You might want to put them in a different room, but not replace them entirely

Budget

A knock-on effect of discovering your old furniture doesn’t look good after a renovation is that you probably don’t have the free cash to replace it. If you start with the assumption that the old furniture needs to go, you can build that into the budget from the start. That might mean scaling back your remodeling plans a little or you may need to take out a slightly bigger loan. The upshot is that you won’t be constantly annoyed by the old furniture or scrambling to replace it.

Disposal Logistics

If you do decide to replace the furniture ahead of time, you’ll face some logistical challenges. While the contractor might remove renovation debris as part of the contract, disposing of the old furniture is your problem. You can try to give it away. Alternatively, some cities do once monthly pickups of large trash. Most neighborhoods, however, frown at the sight of a couch moldering on the curb for weeks on end. A simple disposal option is to rent a roll-away dumpster from a company like TCM Sweeping and Disposal. You can get rid of all the old furniture ahead of time with a minimum of hassle.

Renovating your home is a good way to reinvent the look and feel of your home, but it’s best to include furniture in that planning. It lets you build the cost into the renovation budget, rather than trying to wrangle new furniture out of your budget. Replacing the furniture at the same time gives the entire space the look and feel of newness. You can also deal with the disposal at the same time as the renovation, minimizing the disruption to your neighborhood.
