Though admirable efforts, you shouldn’t forget some other areas where you can save money on monthly bills. Making home improvements that reduce your bills is an often-overlooked way to save money, but it shouldn’t be! Here are four home improvements to try.
Energy Efficient Appliances
One of the first improvements you should try is to replace your older appliances. Energy efficient appliances use less electricity, so you will see a difference in your bill each month.Think about the appliances that you use on a regular basis. You might want to replace your refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, or air conditioner units. Older style dishwashers can use up to 50 percent more water each time. New dishwashers use five to six gallons of water, while older dishwashers can use up to ten gallons.
Improve Insulation
Better insulation means you need less energy to heat and cool your house. Changing your roof insulation allows less heat to escape from your attic and adding more insulation to your walls will do the same. Proper insulation allows less heat to enter your home during the summer and less heat from escaping during the winter. Adding insulation can reduce your bill by 20 percent. You’ll notice a difference in your comfort levels as well. A roll of insulation is less than $20. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this improvement yourself, consider pricing a professional to see what it will cost.
Replace Windows
Old windows allow cold air to enter your home. Replacing drafty windows is one of the best home improvements to try because it will save you money. Your home will experience less heat loss, and your HVAC unit won’t need to work harder to heat and cool your home. That means it will last longer, and you won’t need to replace the unit sooner. If replacing all of your windows is out of your budget, try replacing the weather strips. That is where most of the air enters and escapes.
Try Low Flow Fixtures
Your water bill might be one of your highest utilities each month. Low flow fixtures reduce the amount of water you use each month. Some fixtures can reduce your water consumption by 50 percent. You can find some fixtures for under $30.
Any of these home improvements will save you money over time. Multiple small changes add up over time to make huge savings. It is worth your time and investment to make these improvements.
