Planning a Home Improvement Project for the Upcoming Spring Season

-------------------------------------

Even though the weather is still dreary and cold, it’s never too soon to start thinking about spring. If you want your home to be fresh and colorful when spring arrives, the time to start on your home improvement projects is now. Here are a few home improvement project ideas to help get your home ready for spring.

Freshen Your Home with Paint

There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint in a fun new shade to get your home ready for warm sunny days. Whether you decide to paint just one room or the entire inside of your home, it’s a project that can offer a lot of color punch for a relatively low cost. Painting is also a project that almost anyone can easily accomplish. Try choosing a new dramatic shade to really spice things up. Or, try a neutral shade such as ivory or light taupe. When you use a fresh light shade, the walls can then be used as a nice backdrop for other accent shades used in the room. If you want to make a room look especially bright, be sure to paint the ceiling white.  Paint can also be used to transform certain “flaws” within a room. For instance, if you have a room that is lacking in spaciousness, you can paint it a light, airy color, to make it appear larger.  Inversely, if one room in the home feels too expansive, a coat of paint in a darker shade can give it a cozier  feel that is more welcoming.

Install a Closet Organization System

If you made a resolution to get organized this year, why not start with your closets? Since the average home closet includes only a clothes rod and shelf, you’ll have a much better chance of keeping your resolution by installing a closet organization system. One of the great things about these systems is the fact they are available in so many different styles and configurations. In fact, most closet organization systems are available in different modules, so that you can mix and match the exact features that you need. Try combining shelving, cabinet, drawer and clothes rod modules to provide plenty of specialized storage options. To choose the best system, you should first clean out the closet, check its dimensions and assess its content. Of course, once you have everything out of the closet, you should take the opportunity to discard or donate anything that you don’t really need.   If you have time and want to pick up some extra cash, you might consider
having a tag sale, or taking some of your better discards to a consignment shop.  If not, the local Goodwill or other clothing ministry in your hometown is always looking for items for resale.  One man’s (or woman’s) trash is oftentimes another’s treasure.

Once you’ve whittled down the closet contents to only the things you need, it’s time to think about the best way to store them. Rods are good for clothes hung on hangers, while drawers can work great for lingerie, socks and small clothing items. If you have a lot of sweaters to store, shelves can work well. Hooks and other specialized features are handy for belts, ties and other accessories.  You might also consider investing in a vacuum-seal closet storage system that allows you to remove the air from sweaters, blankets, and so on, so that you maximize your storage space.

Patio or Deck Rejuvenation

Early spring is a great time to start getting your patio ready for summer. Although the weather isn’t yet warm and dry enough to refinish the deck, you can certainly start getting things cleaned up by renting a power washer. Bring the patio furniture out of storage, spraying it clean. If you have any planters around the patio area, remove any dead plants to get ready for new spring flowers. Consider adding a new coat of stain to your deck. Once everything is cleaned up, treat yourself to new patio furniture cushions to add a fresh new look for spring.
