Quick Checklist: What are the causes of basement flooding and how to prevent it

Basements are built below the ground level where groundwater and sewer lines are located. Flooding usually takes place during wet weather where rain, snow melt and ground-thaw place a heavy load on the drainage system. But basement flooding can also happen during dry weather. The common reasons for basement flooding are as follows;

A blocked or a failed sanitary lateral.

A sanitary sewer lateral is like shingle on the roof that can degrade through time. If this is blocked by certain factors like tree roots, the lateral may collapse and cause gradual deterioration, resulting in a sewage backup and basement flooding.
A failure on the foundation drainage.

Homes usually have a drainage system built on it. However, it will fail to serve its purpose and cause flooding when the seepage is too old, when pipes collapse, sewers are full and there is flow restriction in the drainage system.
A failure on the water supply line.

Sometimes, basement flooding is caused by a water supply plumbing and failure of the hot water tank. This can cause aging on the plumbing or equipment, a splitting and a puncture of pipes especially during construction.
An overland flooding.

During heavy rain and rapid snow melt, the surface water may accumulate in the driveways and roads, but it may also pool around the house, particularly the basement. This can cause flooding and damages related to it.

These problems are sometimes unpredictable. However, there are a number of ways to prevent basement flooding from taking place.

Conduct a detailed plumbing investigation or assessment from time to time.
Avoid pouring grease, oil and fats down your sinks.
Proactively repair or seal any cracks and holes found in walls and floors.
Control the ground water in the basement, sump pits, weeping tiles and sump pumps.
Undertake a sewer lateral maintenance.
Have a backwater sanitary valve.
Avoid storing anything in the basement floor.
Keep the catch basins free from debris.
Notify the local utility or municipality if basement flooding is experienced.
Maintain the condition of your basement, sewage system and groundwater system.
