Homeschooling and COVID 19
Notes:
-
Virtual Schooling:
The COVID pandemic caught many families with school-age children unprepared. The paradigm of sending their kids off to school early in the morning before the parents had to go to work had quickly shifted. Many households found their children confined at home without adult supervision or care.
-
Family Management:
So parents were scrambling trying to monitor and manage their children’s virtual classroom study while working and managing other family needs. Of course, this will eventually change once the pandemic is over – or will it? It has been nearly a year; and another pandemic outbreak or variant may find your family again involved in virtual learning.
-
Study-Area Needs:
So now may be the time to setup a study station that will do the following:
- help your children stay motivated and on track with virtual learning
- setup goals and schedules for virtual study and completion
- design an area that kids can call “classroom” that fits their unique personality
- provide the comfort they need to perform online assignments and work – including any social interactions with friends.
-
Some ideas that will help you achieve these stated goals: [ scroll back up ]
- provide a comfortable desk and chair for good posture seating and view for best productivity
- involve as much natural light as possible – it helps for better mood and positive outlook
- install good work lighting for the desk and bed area where children will often study and read
- add a large visual clock (for the desk or wall) for time management and view
- position the study area close to the bed giving your student two locations for work and study.

Back to School or Homeschooling
Notes:
-
Another Paradigm Shift:
It’s been nearly a year since the pandemic locked-down our society and forced schools (both K-12 and colleges) to virtual learning – not to mention the adjustments forced upon students and family. Some communities in certain states have returned or are making the return to classroom study; other communities are waiting until teachers are fully vaccinated.
- The question you need to ask is whether to allow your student to return or set them up for permanent homeschooling.
-
Why Homeschooling:
Simply because of the lack of quality public education and discipline. Depending on your area, your public school system may not be providing the best overall education for your children. And in some districts that have good public schools, you may need to determine how and what they are teaching your kids on ethics and life skills.
- Your might find that the type and quality of education can be done better inside the home. And since you now have homeschooling experience for the past year, why not continue that effort to ensure your child excels in education and social development.
-
How Is This Done:
There are tons of educational information about homeschooling – not to mention online instructional courses and seminars by professional presenters. Your child can work at their respective pace in English, mathematics, science and social studies. And you can find professional tutorial assistance if your child is struggling in any of the key academics. Something that many public school systems are not setup to provide.
-
What About Social Development:
In many communities, home schoolers have formed homeschooling networks where social gatherings for varying ages come together for sports, the arts, nature hikes, museum visits and other extra curriculum programs where students can learn and socialize with each other.
- Dedication from parents and online networks can provide your child the social and intellectual interaction they need.
-
Setup a colorful work space area for social and intellectual thinking: [ scroll back up ]
- use their favorite colors to build a study station that defines their unique personality
- you can find – or better yet build and paint – panel boards in the varying colors they love
- add a small sofa that allows them to take a break – perhaps even a short nap to energize them for the afternoon push
- install some wall scones that illuminate the workstation and couch
- display their favorite decor pieces that promote personal interest and hobbies.

And For Your Older Student
Notes:
-
High Schoolers:
High Schoolers may pose a bigger challenge when it comes to home schooling. Many of them prefer to attend a public or private school to being around classmates. So as schools gradually return to normal attendance, your older children might opt to attend full or part-time for the high school experience.
-
A Style That Reflects Their Growing Up:
Regardless whether the continue home schooling or attend public schooling, they need a study area that allows them to keep up with those important studies that get them into the best colleges. So the study area must reflect a more mature theme that invites them into the room to study.
-
Some ideas from the photo above: [ scroll back up ]
- give them an interesting wall that reflects their maturity – something they can choose with an ombre effect or other color
- high schoolers love adventure and outdoor activities – so maybe a bike, sporting racket, mountain boots or other to function as theme decor
- and of course their study area must come with a good desk, chair and lighting for late-night crams and exam prep

For Those In College
Notes:
-
College Bound:
You may have – or soon to have – a college student that will likely remain at home while colleges slowly reopen for on-campus teaching. Some college are back in full swing; while many other colleges are offering limited services and in-classroom teaching to avoid a spike of COVID-19 cases. It all depends where and when your college student will attend. But don’t be surprised if you find them taking online college courses at home.
-
Colleges Are Better Prepared:
Colleges are in better position for online instruction since many of them have been offering online programs years – and more colleges are moving online to reduce administrative costs that have been greatly impacted by the pandemic. So if your student will be going to college “at home”, you need to setup a study area that will help them succeed.
-
So how from the photo above: [ scroll back up ]
- start with a chalkboard wall by painting one wall with chalkboard or whiteboard paint – it’s very easy to do
- your college student could use the board to list assignments, draw graphs, and post schedules. But more importantly, he or she can use the blackboard to illustrate homework assignments and thought with the teacher and other students online.
- another idea is a wall clock or other large clock for keeping time
- and of course, they need a nice desk and chair next to a window that makes them feel like being in a college dorm or apartment.

When Your Student Children Need Support
Notes:
-
Working Together:
Now matter how hard they try, some children may find it difficult to focus on virtural home study. So for your home office, setup an large workstation where you can work – and as needed provide assistance to a child who is struggling.
- A dual, sitting desk with dual monitors for guidance, hand-holding, and working through the issues. And when they feel comfortable, they can return to their study station and you can continue working at yours.
-
Using Tutors:
Note that this pandemic has open opportunities for many young, academically-strong students to function as tutors. Tutors add academic support especially for students who struggle in math, science, and other studies.
- Using tutors give allow you the time to do your work and still lend support as needed. Between your guidance and the use of tutors, your student will be able to excel no matter the challenges they may be facing.
-
FINAL REMARKS
whether the COVID pandemic keeps your kids at home, or whether you decide to switch to home schooling, or whether you have an older or college student studying at home, all of them need a study area that will help motivate and keep them focused. It just takes some creating thinking and design.
