New Design Concepts

Living rooms have come a long way from the formal living rooms of the past. Today's living rooms feature tall ceilings, walls of windows and easy access to the dining area.

As the kitchen has become such a central part of the home, many people are changing the way they view – and decorate – living rooms. Instead of having formal living room furniture that is rarely used, many people are looking for a more casual living room design.

Many of today's floor plans include a living room that opens to the dining room. This "great room" design creates a more open floor plan and is ideal for entertaining. Living room furniture then takes on a larger, but more casual flair. Soft couches with floral patterns and lots of accent pillows are replacing the structured living room furniture of the past.

Adding Light and Color

When renovating or redecorating a living room, look to bring light in and add color. This can be achieved through adding a set of three tall windows on a wall or removing the wall between the living room and dining room. Another alternative is to add a "cut out" between the two rooms that can become a breakfast bar.

While the formal living rooms of the past are becoming obsolete, there is no reason to let your space go to waste. Look for ways to open the space, add light, and beef up your living room design. You'll create a whole new place to entertain and unwind.
