DIY – Planting Trees

No need to hire a landscaper to truly transform your yard, why not try it yourself? Trees make your yard look its best and accent the rest of your landscaping and house as well. It may seem like a daunting task at first, but with a few helpful hints you can be well on your way.

Research

It is important to research which types of trees grow best in your area. This is important as temperatures vary throughout and certain trees need a certain environment to thrive in. Ask a local nursery as the more than likely know the area and what thrives best in the region.

Why are You Planting the Trees?

It is important to answer that question, because it will then determine which kinds of trees you’ll be planting. Are you planting trees to just to make the year more eye appealing, or are you seeking more shade? Are you trying to establish a privacy barrier? Find out your reasoning behind planting trees in your yard and then go ahead choose the trees that best fit your needs.

Determine the Location and Hole Dimensions

Select the spot of where you would like to plant your tree. Depending on the form the trees are in, there are few options of how to go about planting your trees. More than likely you are receiving your trees in a "ball like form", where the roots of the trees are caged into a metal-like fence. You would need to measure from one end of the ball to the other, in order to determine how wide of a hole you need to dig for your tree. In order to determine the depth of the hole you need, measure from the base of the tree to the bottom of the ball. Once these measurements are determined, go ahead and begin to dig your hole.

Plant and Nurture Your Tree

When planting your tree, be sure to remove any type of packaging (plastic wrapping or wire ball), as you want your tree to thrive and grow roots, without any constrictions. Loosen the roots, as you would with other plants and flowers) so the roots are free to expand themselves once planted. When placing your tree in the pre-dug hole, make sure it is straight before filling in the hole back in with dirt. Although, not necessary, but extremely beneficial, mix some fertilizer in with the dirt you dug out before filling the hole back in. Nurturing your soil will give your tree what it needs to grow and flourish. Finally, fill in your hole and be sure to water your new tree.
